shaving gu diffs, front 3rd in rear wendle etc a little help

Post by bru21 »

Navi is flying down and him and I will be fitting the lockers front and rear aust day w/end. will be trussing and laminating them too at the same time. I have cut up a spare housing and looks like I could gain an 1" or so. who recommends doing this. Have people given up doing this or is it still happening. hasn't been discussed for a while.

thinking 10mm plate will suffice for the bottom. Is oil a problem then or do they still last.

also have a spare front gq 3rd member is it worth taking the rear c/w & p outta my rear and fitting it to the spare front housing with an arb rear locker. to give me a high pinion. does this weaken the diff due to the new pinion location, will the axles reach ok or are custom needed.

only have 3 days so have whats need first will help rather than figuring it out which is always a pain working blind with 3rds, hence having to measure everything.

are the carrier bearings the same before i order them (assuming rear bearings will be the go as they suit the locker - are the bearings larger than fronts as axles are different splines.)

will the studs hole spacing suit, or is it a weld up and drill and tap new ones affair?

heard it has been done by some melb boys

will help the shaft angles with the dual transfers!

detail would be good

cheers bru

Bru,
We did it just to gain back the clearance lost from plating / protecting the pumpkin. We've done it to our current GQ (but its only done one comp), and the previous truck too (about 18 months before it was sold). Shaved about 18mm off, and used 6mm plate to replace the removed section with another 6mm plate across the whole front/underside to protect the rest of the diff.

From memory, you can shave 22mm but that requires mods to the crown wheel. Again, this is for GQ's.

Cheers

KRIMNL on this board has done the high pinion rear conversion, maybe ask him directly.

i had a high pinion diff untill it blew up in the Alpine challange , might have been the burnouts a couple of weeks B4 at calder park, or maybe the runs down the 1/4 , but i believe they are a little weaker so it is a sacrifice

i had mine done at by Sandy AT Aus4wd as well as the shaved bottom , but i know the std axles fit and you just need to drill and tap a hole higher in the housing ,
i have a high pinion in the misses GU and its done 40,000 without a problem it has a healthy intercooled TD42 and it gets driven hard .

so i need another set of 4.625's, to go that way. as its the rear carrier i am assuming a rear airlocker.

anyone got a spare front c/w and p going cheapish. Might get over it, as i am not sure if the benefit of tailshaft missing things warrents a weaker drive. Will have a look this weekend. I might rotate the diff a bit instead before i shave it, and run a double cardian on the rear as the transfer will then be straight!

thanks mate
