bigger radiator - hilux/ 4runner

Post by -Mick- »

My old 4y-e petrol 4 runners (1987) radiator is a bit sad looking with folded and corroded fins and she's getting a bit hot on the beach. Time for a new one I reckon :)

The petrol one is a little 2 core thing so if its coming out abyway I'd like to beef up the system :cool: What will fit and how much will it be :?: I don't want to just recore my old one cause its and expensive exercise to not gain any improvement :? So I can;

*Put one from a 2.4 diesel in, they're 3 core so a decent improvement. I've been told they fit but are they taller? I have no lift so a longer one COULD be prone to damage. Do they actually fit??? Will I need to swap hoses or modify the radiator???

*Get a custom one or alloy etc. How much are people paying for these... say 3 core from desert coolers or custom made or something. Or is there a place that makes them aftermarket ready to go, you can get just about anything for a hilux :lol:

Other ideas???

Thanks

Depending how much room is in the frame , thickness , you could recore with a 3 core one. I replaced a 2 core with a 4 core and it just fit in the frame. :shock:
Go to a local radiator place to see what they can do for you.

Try to get one which is about 18 fins per square inch, easier to get mud and crap out of :D . Also get the "S" type fins for better preformance when cooling.

with a bit of work you can make a 60 series landcruiser one fit. Not sure if mine is a pet/diesel one but i had to get inlet/outlet changed and make new mounts.

thanks guys I'd like to avoid chopping the mounts if possible. My fab work consists of race tape and wd40 :lol:

I didn't realise you could recore with a bigger inside. If they're the same external dimensions that'd work but if the diesel one is taller maybe not :cry:

Keep the ideas coming :D
