I was told that in Brisbane this was not an option. The whole cooling unit needed replacing.

Don't know about melbourne.

Yep, turn it upside down (I do this if it hasn't been used for a while anyway) and you may notice a big difference...

Worth a try!

Was this a 3 way ? Didn't know they made 3-ways.

When left standing for a while, the constituent liquids (IIRC, ammonia, bromine and water) seperate out of solution.
There is a procedure (a least with Electrolux's, should work the same with other absorbtion type fridges) where you tip onto one side (i think the reactor side), then onto the top, then onto the next side, pausing at each stage till the gurgling stops. Tip back onto a top corner, and shake the bejesus out of it for about a minute, then slowly stand upright and let stand for a bit, (again at least until all the gurfling has stopped) then turn on.

As cooter said, you'll know if it has a leak from the ammonia smell ;)
