Pajero Challenge 2006

Daley, you're a bloody stirrer. The electrical problem is being sorted out. The Pajero Challenge will be a good endurance test for the new turbo and Fox Racing Shox in all four corners. RedMav is a good navigator, but then again Robert Pepper will be challenging everyone's navigation skills again this year.Rugrat wrote:

Ok, without being spun a yarn a mile long. What are we up against??? We've been given a wildcard entry for this years challenge and are travelling from interstate for our first crack at a Pajero challenge.
Is it a high speed event?
Is there much winching??
Is it an event where you need to run beadlocks???
Is it hard 4WDriving????
Is damage likely to occur?????

Hey Daflee, Congrats on the entry firstly!
Well I'm probably not the best qualified to tell you all because the last Paj i done was 2002. But what i can tell you is the four we have done the terrain has been perfect. Just hard enough that you're kept on your toes but not truck destructing stuff.
As for bead locks, i wont be running them cos i don't got 'em! you can expect to use your winch, weather permitting multiple times how ever it is far from a winch comp.
Definetly not a high speed event. They usually fairly well police the speed as the event is on public roads and there's always the risk of ooncoming traffic. The event is not timed however each section normally has a maximum allowable time. If you can keep your wits about for 24 hours then you'll have a ball.
I reckon it's one of the best events going around It's full on but casual at the same time, if that makes sense.
Look forward to seeing there. If that you truck in the pic i'll come say gudday!

It's not a speed event. It's a Navigation Event, but you have to manage your time so you don't fall behind. If you make a wrong turn and you find yourself many kms from the intended route, then you may have to cut & run your course shorter than planned so that you can check-in on time. Speed may go against you. There's no point in going flat out to the wrong place. You only score points for being at the right place. If you can navigate accurately you should have plenty of time to complete the course.
The format this year is similar to last year's format. If there's a hard track then you can elect to drive it to gain points or take an easier track, but before you take the easier track you will be asked to do something to gain equivalent points.
Running beadlocks is up to you. Personally I don't think you'll need it. Most will probably run their tyres above 20psi.
Is it hard 4WDriving???? Depends on whether you take the harder options. In any case, 24 hours of high country driving is going to be hard on the car and on physical fitness. Make sure that you're 4wd is in top condition. The suspension is going to be working overtime. In the last 4 years we've had dry dusty conditions, so it was hard on cooling systems. Good driving lights will reduce tiredness during the night stages.
Is damage likely to occur? Not intentionally. The tracks are generally gazetted tracks somewhere in the high country. It depends on how you drive (read driver error) and the condition of your 4wd (read mechanical breakdown).
Other advice.....be prepared and be fit. This is an endurance event for the driver, navigator and 4wd. Make sure you know how to use the GPS and how to read a map properly. You should know all about datums, UTM and Deg/Min formats, projections, bearings, etc. Read Robert Pepper's book on GPS Navigation. Once you're in the event, read all the paper work twice and once you think you understand it, read it again. Don't miss anything. Attention to detail will help.
Since you haven't competed before, you should ask the organisers to send you a copy of route notes from last year.

I'd say Lockee's going for line honours again this year. He's not even stopping for checkpoints cause it might slow him down.
Hey Rugrat. Now I know that you weren't born with a silver spoon cause you still have that wooden stirring spoon in your mouth. The GR8 GU is not in any condition to drive. Still waiting for pistons. I may have to do the Paj Challenge in the Disco or the Paj - just to stir up Turps and Bitsamissin.
