Is it possable to further crush the pinion preload sleeve by hitting and draging the pinion flange across ruts/rocks ?
All hell broke loose with the rear sals. Its 100% ok when cruising under throttle but when backed off or in neutral it sounds like someone is going stupid with a sledge hammer and a bag of marbles in a tin can. All was going ok until the last track of the weekend when i got bogged and hung up in some stupid arse ruts. Also the pinion seal is leaking BIG TIME and there is heaps of slop in the pinion / tailshaft - you can wiggle it lots. (it could just be a collapsed bearing)???
This diff is comming out anyway as the rebuilt maxi is almost ready, But if there is a known problem with the crushable sleeves - i'll re-do this area with a solid slug on the new diff.
Any ideas??

If the Pinion was loaded and the inner pinion bearing was pushed hard home at the time the flange was hit it is possible for the flange to move inward. Then the crush sleave can be compressed more. If this is the case the flange can be removed and you can add some shims to the end of the sleave so you can then get the right pre-load again. Or its pull the centre and pinion and replace the sleave. Unless the sleave can be removed with the flange removed and the outer pinion bearing removed. But im not sure if this is possible with the Salisbury. Its not with a Toyota Diff.

I dropped the tail shaft today and found the pinion nut had backed off. Re-tightend it bush mechanic style (in between tight and stupid tight) All good now. Got me stuffed how it undid itself.
Andrew - ive got a new land rover pinion seal at work, I'll have a look for an OEM part number on it. Although dont hold your breath.
