5 Speed into a HJ47...
I have a 1984 HJ47 that is screaming out for another gear.
How hard is it to put a 5 speed out of say a 60 series in it? Will it just bolt up?

have helped do this conversion before using a hj75 gearbox it is a tight fit because of the piece of pipe that braces the chassis at the rear of the gearbox. We had to take the rear transfer case cover off to get it in but if you loosened the engine mounts and some jacking off the motor it should fit. You will need to use your bell-housing there is some difference in the bellhousings i cant remember what. And also new tailshafts front and rear or shorten the rear and put a spacer in the front. Also gearboxes from 2f 3f will fit they are the same box just make sure the input shaft has a coarse spline. The 47 crossmember lines up aswell so the only cutting involved is a little bit to the floorpan to get the shifters to fit from memory we bent the transfer to fit into the stock hole and trimmed the main shifter hole and used a 75 boot to cover the hole.
If at first you dont succeed.......get a bigger HAMMER!!!
I put a 5 spd from a 60 series into my HJ47 troopy - went in no worries, bolted to bell housing good, i think the shafts were different length, didn't measure them as i pulled them from another truck.
I ended up using the floor pan shifter hole cover from the 60 series, and cut/shut/welded to suit my floor. Works great.

Mate, the extra gear is not really worth the bother, as the 15% overdrive comes at a cost of reliability, you cant tow in 5th and expect the box to last...also it is only 500 rpm we r talking about at 100 km/hr, so it would be cheaper to look for transfer gears and get a lower low range whilst at it.....you cant blow that 4 speed up if u try

Got 40 series power steer from a BJ42, used steering box from that, 60 series pump bolted straight to 2H, bend and mod lines to suit, had a new pressure line made up, and also made a bracket to hold the remote reservoir for the p/s steer fluid.
Need more info let me know.
