Please help - where is the timing mark thingy!

Post by drewe »

Hey all,

OK, dumb question, but I have never done this before... I am about to adjust the timing of my roza (it is crapped - I replaced the Dizzy recently) - I have all the tools, but where is this mark I am aiming my timing light at?

Do I need to remove the timing belt cover and it is one of those gears, or is it one which is out? Grrrr. I might have learned a lot recently, but still plenty more!

Still coulnd't find it after ages, so I just advanced the timing till it almost can't go any further - runs much better :)

Of course, I am probably causing some other problem :(

There's a cut out notch in the front pulley edge IIRC and you should see it in between the timing markers when the light is attached to the spark plug lead closest to the front of the engine. Adjust the distributor until it is central between the markers- making sure the vacuum advance is first disconnected from the distributor and blocked off. If you're not sure which pipe it is, it's the one that has vacuum when the engine is idling (the other one won't.)

DON'T drive around with it fully advanced! Even running 98 octane fuel you will be getting detonation which will very quickly destroy your engine!!!!

while motor is not running run your finger around the front pulley edge. you should feel the little nick out of it. if at bottom of revolution just twitch your starter till it is at the top so you can see it. then go inside the house and grab either a white marker or liquid paper and mark it so you cant lose it again ;)

it will be on the closest edge to the motor
