Bundera Engine Conversion- COMPLETED!!

Post by BUNDERA »

Ok I am thinking seriously about taking my bundy off the road for a few months to do an engine conversion.

I have F'All power and have a high fuel consumption, go figure. :bad-words:

It currently has the 22R.

What engine can I put in it, how much is it gonna cost and what else am I gonna have to modify (remembering I am in Tassie and they dont really give a sh*t)?

I want good economy but more power.

I know marks4wd adaptors have some good info on there site about the commo v6. Where else has some good info?

I am open to all suggestions (within reason, ie. no 350chevs :) ) .

Please give reasons for ur choice.
I am open to either diesel or petrol. With diesel I would perfer turbo.

Regards,
Nick

I would perfer not to have to muck around with reverse sumps and all. Like you have to do with the v6 commo. :x

There is a bundy down here with a 253 v8 where could I get details on that conversion.

Cheers,
Nick

I thought you wanted decent economy? With a 253? Forget it!!!

Surely someone makes a kit for the Bundy for the V6 commo. Should be able to buy the kit and that sump would be a bolt on.

A mate of mine just finished a V6 commo conversion on a Datto 720 King Cab (4WD) and the kit he got was not bad, it included the sump. I'll see if i can find out where he got it from.

EDIT: Just rang the dude, he told me he got it from Pat Gardner, did a web search and voila! check it out http://www.v6conversions.com.au/toybun.htm

yeah marks 4wd adaptors do a kit for the v6 commo into the bundy. infact that page you found was a cut and paste from them. :?

What sort of economy would u expect to get with the v6commo. Would it be better considering it isn't working as hard?

hmm.
What about the Prado 3.4L petrol or Prado 3.0LTD?
My dad used to have a prado 3.4L before his td100 series and it went like the clappers and returned good fuel economy! Would it fit?

all right I have given the prado idea the toss.

I am really keen to get this conversion under way. Rang up some local holden wreckers this arvo. Prices seem good...

$1550 for complete V6 commo engine (VN) including all bits like commo, fuel pump, power steer, mem cal, wiring loom, alternator, starter, flywheel, exhaust (y section). Has done less than 150'000.
This guy was very helpful and said I could get anything I needed out of it for the conversion for that price. even comes with 3month warranty

Another wrecker told me about $2000 for the same deal. BUT another wrecker toldme $950 for the whole lot (this seems a little suspect)

What is a good price to pay for one of these engines? Are there any problems I should look out for?

What sort of economy should these provide both on highway/town (if driven lightly)?

"I'm excited!!"
Looks like this might be a goer

I think the first 2 guys seen you comming
The $950 sounds like the average price up here for a complete set-up. You can buy complete V6 VN's from the auctions for $1000 registered.
If you are going to use a Commo V6 dont use an Early VN engine. Make sure that the top radiator hose goes into the front of the manifold not the back. The early engines are prone to failure and have the top hose going to the rear.

Thanks Ruff,

Cars/engines down here are very expensive (thats why I got my bundy in melb).

I thought that the $950 one sounded dodgy as it was so cheap compared to all the other wreckers.

Would it be worth looking at getting one from melbourne shipped over?

I just found another engine for sale in the weekend paper for $1000 complete.

I am so keen!!!

I can see it now... F'king big exhaust hanging off the old girl, vroom vroom giving some of them commos a run!!!

Thanks for all your help so far,

Nick

This one sounds dodge

COMMODORE 1993 VR V6 engine, auto gearbox, wiring loom and computer, $500 the lot

suspect..

Now that I am lookingn in closer Ruff I see that you are right. Those prices are very high.

Commodore VR V6 motor $1000,

HOLDEN COMMODORE ENGINE 1994, VP series II, complete with fuel injection, bargain, $950

Which models can I rig up with my g52F box... I found what was written on the marks site a little confusing ( there is only one model of auto that you can add a fly wheel too.)?

All of the V6 engines can be addapted to your G52F.
I think they are talking about the series one engines as they have a different bolt pattern for auto and manual on the crank. All the others up till the VT V6 are the same for manual and auto.
One thing is that Holden does not have a single manual flywheel left they sold the last one about a year ago to a mate of mine up here in QLD. They are available new aftermarket but last i checked they were around $600.

The VR engine would be my choice. And if you can here the $500 one run i would buy it. It is very rare to find a bad VR engine.

all i can say is 1GGZE

Toyota motor bolts upto G52 box
140+ kw
no adaptors just bolts in even using 22R engine mounts
cheap $895 complete
needs aftermarket computer but wouldnt use original even with commo conversion and what u save one conversion bits u can spend on a mad fully adjustable computer system.........
dont know y Bundys didn't come out with them

Holden and Toyota bits dont mix well, conversions r a head f**k at the best of times!!!!!!!!

Cheers Daniel

Personally i would stick with the big block 22R to u blow it up at least!

Thanks for the info Daniel but I am still pretty sure I am going to go Holden V6, as the parts are cheaper than ones for a jap import toyota motor.

Spoke to Tim at Marks 4wd Adaptors this morning, he gave me some good advice about what I will need etc... Once I have the funds, hopefully in the next few weeks, I will order the stuff and get a VN V6 Comodore engine locally. Sounds like it should go alright. :)

i am thinking 2.5"exhaust, pretty much straight through for better performance and sound.

My 22r is up for sale, take a look in the "For Sale" section for details.

Yeah I know, thanks though. Marks actually manufacture the kit for the conversion.

Anyway there is no going back now. I have started to pull out the old 22r :) .

Spent about 2hours on it today:

Progress:
Checked out some engines this morning. Found a good VP one but will need a flywheel  .

I had to remove my 6" sespension lift again  to fit the bloody thing under the house so I can remove the engine. I swear those spring-compressors will break next time I use them

Removed batteries, battery trays, air ducting, air box and dual battery system.

Drained the engine oil.

Will get stuck intoit tomorrow. Might even get the engine out if I work hard enough!

Should I post the details and pics up as I go along??

Nick

no buyer as yet and she ait efi unfortunatly

Will try to sell as completeunit. I am going to advertise in local paper this coming weekend as it is almost out.

Tonight...
I removed the radiator, the radiator shroud. loosened the bolts to the bellhousing, removed the blots holding the exhaust. Removed powersteering fluid-hoses and resivoir. Removed wires to the alternator and startermotor..etc...etc...

unfortunatly there was no other way to get the car into the garage and it would have been several inches to high.

Will post up some pics from now on.

Productive day!.

Removed Power steering pipes
Removed Aircon piping
Removed exhaust system.
Removed the engine!!!!

What I found:
Though-out bearing -fuked
Clutch -pretty well fuked
Apart from that everything was cool!

Lotsa water had been through the clutch.. couldn't guess why.

Will post pics later tonight or tomorrow.

I love your avatar, sort of fitting for a Tasmanian. I would honestly listen to bundytime, or Ruff.

the economy of the Holden will be bad, a Toyota import motor has expensive parts cause they dont fawk up, commodores are the opposite (but cheap) a toyota motor might fit better as Bundytime, suggested. The aftermarket computer and better reliability and performance should pay for itself. bundytime has been there.... so have I dont fawk with it..........

I think a guy that has no idea what a charcoal canister is, should think twice about doing the complete conversion of a V6. Please remember when you loosen all the bolts and take the engine mounts out, do not be underneath it unless it is well supported.

Best of luck!! (Toyota motor will be cheaer in the long run) no bellhousing needed, and you are getting a custom flywheel anyways, they take the teeth off your flex plate and fit them to a flywheel. I would seriously harass bundytime for everything he knows about the 1G and go that route!!! He is the bundy master on here!!

Thanks for your suggestions BJ.

Glad you like the avtar, I thought of you when I found it. :finger:

As for the engine conversion, I am going ahead with the holden engine as I feel that it is best for my needs, both onroad and off. I can also get the parts alot easier than a jap import. If you lived in Tassie you would most probably agree with me as there are very few imports cars around letalone spare parts. You would be lucky to see 2/3 skylines a day let a lone 1 supra.

Trust me I have enquired about getting either a 1ggze and a 1ggte engine imported through the 1 and only jap engine importer here in Hobart but he couldn't help me for under $5600

As for your comments about the charcoal canister....I knew what it was and what was connected 2 it but didn't know what the hell the bloody thing did.

As for your comments about the engine mounts, I am sorry but I dont find it funny.

A guy is coming to look at the engine tonight, he is hoping to convert it to efi...

ok sorry about the delay.. here are some pics from the other day,

The engine bay is almost empty now. Since the photos I have removed the bellhousing, slave sylinder, aircon hoses and pipes, powersteering hoses and pipes and alot of unneeded wiring.

A guy came and looked at the engine the other day, he is keen and will try and raise the money over this week hopefully.

Anyway here is some of the progress...

Ok I thought you guys would be interested in what I used to lift the engine out...

no it wasn't block and tackle.....try a tifor hand winch!!

Worked bloddy well. I have a photo somewhere, will try to find it.

I used the winch horizontally (mounted on the roof of the gararge under the house) [so leavers pointing towards the ground] with the winch being fastened around one of the massive horizontal steel I beam supports under the house and used a snatchblock to redirect the wire to the engine!!!

Worked a treat!
