Is this correct for gq's/mavs
Is this correct for gq's/mavs
All TB4.2 autos, both Patrols and Mavs
1st 2.784:1
Low 2.020:1
Diff 3.9:1
Patrols came with either 265/70 r16's or 10r15's, basically same diameter,
but Mavs had 215/80 r16 nearly an inch smaller, so how did they compensate, did they just mess with the speedo or is this info wrong?
Got the info from the RACV website, I would have thought their info would have been fairly correct.

I thought all the autos had 3.9s as well, but maybe I just pulled that out of my arse.
But anyway the manuals vary more than that; I've had two mavericks that both came stock with a manual transmisson and 3.9:1 final drive. And Mavs have TB42s, no smaller engines.
Then again there are also lots of stock Mavs with 4.1:1 diffs and manual transmissions.
(Just on this as well, 3.9:1 diffs and 33" tyres are FANTASTIC with a petrol 4.2. I was expecting the car to be a real dog with the 33s on because of stuff I had read here, but now I can only conclude that it was all from people with diesel motors. The ratios are just right now. It pulls well, and it's stilll low-geared enough that I can take off in second gear if I'm feeling lazy, but it doesn't have that "in 1st gear for 0.1 seconds" feel any more.

This is not legal advice.
Yep, just different speedo drive gears.msh wrote:That's what I thought as well, so if all autos had 3.9's how did they compensate for for the differing tyre sizes?chimpboy wrote:I thought all the autos had 3.9s as well, but maybe I just pulled that out of my arse.
Did they just adjust speedo settings?

My Diesel Auto had 4.1's standard... Mates manual of same month/yr had 4.1's...
me thinks it has to do with what they have in stock at the time of building... there seems to be no set standard of gearing.
Surely there would have been a set standard, they can't be that crazy to just whack in what was laying around.
My research was done on only LWB's autos, I came up with all petrol autos with 3.9's, and diesel auto's with 4.1's, can't really comment on manuals.
I would have thought that the auto's would have had a better diff ratio since 1st is geared so high.
Thanks guys.
(I didn't mean to start the diff debate, I was just wondering about the speedo gearing)
