Landcruiser diif centre with 4 spider gears?

Post by turbo4t »

I just pulled a centre out of a 40 series diff to find a 4 spider open centre. I've pulled hundreds of 40/60 diffs apart but never seen one of these. Anyone know what it might be out of?. I've seen them listed on the ratio charts but it doesn't specify where they were used, They seem alot mode HD than a standard diff.

This is a Torsen LSD...bloody beaut things...they differentiate on hard surfaces, and lock up on soft.

Sounds good. Never heard of them though, are they common?. Do they lock tight?

This system was the answer to optimum traction in the mid 80's i remember concidering them againt the air locker at the time but they were having bad problems with them stripping the teeth off the heleical gears visable in the original post and to produce it with sufficient strenght to survive hard 4x4 use like what air locker was subjected to the size of the components needed to be dramatically increased and would no longer fit into the available space envelope of a diff centre carrier. The concept just went quite and seeing that pic brought back the memories.
