The main differences are that the gearbox and brake systems are external. This allows the gear set to be much bigger (stronger) and the drum does not heat up as much because all the running gear is external. This also allows the running gear to run slightly cooler. The gearbox on a high mount winch is easier to work on and holds more oil which again keeps things a little cooler. That's about all I can think of.

And high mounts are faster, (read alot)and are only available in electric 8000 pound. There are numerous brands, sizes and types available in a low mount and are generally cheaper than a high mount. They take up less room in you bar too. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you are using it for, and what the wallet can provide.

Himount winches use a counter gear type reduction, use a external brake and have oil lubricated sump for lube (would have to be Warns most oldest, most popular and reliable winch) , low mounts use a compound planetary gear set for the reduction very strong but being grease lubricated generate more heat and require more maint they also in most cases have an internal brake that transfers more heat into the cable drum and thats why there not as suited to using synthetic winch ropes. The Himounts are the best for high usage aplication but most modern winch bars are made to suit the more common compact low mount winch designs.
