The main differences are that the gearbox and brake systems are external. This allows the gear set to be much bigger (stronger) and the drum does not heat up as much because all the running gear is external. This also allows the running gear to run slightly cooler. The gearbox on a high mount winch is easier to work on and holds more oil which again keeps things a little cooler. That's about all I can think of. :D

And high mounts are faster, (read alot)and are only available in electric 8000 pound. There are numerous brands, sizes and types available in a low mount and are generally cheaper than a high mount. They take up less room in you bar too. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you are using it for, and what the wallet can provide. ;)

Himount winches use a counter gear type reduction, use a external brake and have oil lubricated sump for lube (would have to be Warns most oldest, most popular and reliable winch) , low mounts use a compound planetary gear set for the reduction very strong but being grease lubricated generate more heat and require more maint they also in most cases have an internal brake that transfers more heat into the cable drum and thats why there not as suited to using synthetic winch ropes. The Himounts are the best for high usage aplication but most modern winch bars are made to suit the more common compact low mount winch designs.

I have a 6hp 9500xp and it is fast enough but no where near as fast as a high mount with a 6hp, let alone a running 24 volts through one which is FN fast! First time I saw a 24v 6hp high mount in action I was blown away!(Wally!)

I have the 6hp from Warn, the same one used on 9.5XP low mount warn winch. The one from Traxion looks interesting.

Yes we are working on one but would be unlikely to be available any time soon. We need to do a heap of testing before we would release it to the market. I can assure you when it is ready you will know about it.
