i'm not 100% sure but i think it does but when going from 4 to 5 speed you need the tranfer drive gear off the 5 speeds output shaft.

thanks that's a step in the right direction - so you reckon if I get a 5spd with transfer from a petrol it should bolt to the SD33? would need the 5 speed tailshafts?

If you can get the box to bolt up you will have to get the five speed shafts as they are different lengths to the 4-speed. The front one is longer and the rear is shorter than the 4-speed ones.

i have a 4spd on a 86 3.3 turbo diesel that had a 5 speed on it and still use the turbo diesel clutch and preasure plate. i had to modify the carrier for the throwout race but i did use the 5 spd carrier. if you go to the 5spd flywheel clutch and preasure plate and carrier yes it will fit. if you want to stay with the 4 spd gear you will have to have your carrier modified which wouldnt be difficult(lengthened about 10mm). and yes you would have to change your tailshafts and gearbox mounts on the chassis

I'm a bit confused - did the 4spd come from a petrol model?

(also why retrograde to a 4spd from 5spd?)
