I have lockers front and rear in my 60...I have changed the wiring loom so they can be engaged individually.
I turn the front on a lot more than the rear...So I would go front.
Also my brother inlaw was faced with that Q in a hilux...he ended up going rear and has regretted ever since.

If you do a lot of hill climbs and want the front to kick around and throw you down the hill sideways, then put it in the front, I have seen it happen. I you want control because you have the weight over the wheels that are driving while you are doing hill climbs, then put it in the back. Unless you intend going up hills backwards. I have watched 4bys on the same hill one with locker in the front and one with locker in the back and the one with the locker in the front was bloody scary.

But then i got my rear one.... now i hardly use the front..
so i would say rear...

the problem with a locker in the rear of a shorty for hill climbs is that u will end up on your roof
if u lock the front it allows the front to drive alot more thus changeing the weight balance of the car. and also allows you to take the hills that will make u land on your roof slower and with more control

If you end up on your roof with the locker in the rear then you are not driving steady like you are talking about, you are putting the boot in way to hard. Locking the front will not change your weight balance at all. The weight is still at the back. All it will mean is instead of having 1 wheel scrabling for traction, you will have 2 wheels scrabling for traction, because the weight is still over the back wheels. Having both front wheels scrabling for traction with no or little drive at the back, is the reason why the front kicks around and can put you on your side. as i have a bundy i know how shit the front flexes and the front lifting wheels is a regular on a desent track thus loosing front drive
i would say go front first with a bundy as you will then be able to drive forward on 3 wheels rather than loosing both front.

Midi73's 100% right, putting a locker in the front is not going to change the weight balance of the front.Locking the front will not change your weight balance at all. I dont know why ppl seem so scared about driving shortys up hills. I've got a 1990 PZJ70 SWB on 35's and have never even come close to going over backwards..
My mate has a worked 350 Chev FJ40 on 35's and a heavy right foot and has popped the front wheels up from time to time on some pretty hairy tracks (otways).. but with a bit of driver knowledge about the limits of your car its not significant enough to be scared about.
I'd put a locker in the rear of mine without question.
Just my humble opinion of course.

I've only got one locker - in the rear of my troopy ( i didn't have any choice as it was in the rear diff when i got them) - and it makes a huge difference. There is so much more weight over the rears compared to the front - look at how easy it is to spin the fronts when you're driving around on them with the rear shaft out after you've blown your rear diff (speaking from experience).
