I use a dell axim with a compact flash GPS and run destinator DN. Plug in and address and it gives verbal and visual directions. Even gave us directions to get back home from Walkers track in Melbourne.....
Pretty cool I havn't used a melway in 6mths.
You can use any Windows CE handheld.
also works really well on the older Dell X50 handheld my bro has.....
cheers

What are you looking at using it for? I've got an Ipax HX4700 with a CF GPS receiver and I'm running Destinator and Oziexplorer. Destinator is a street based navigation package with voice directions. Very cool and whilst it does have some of the major tracks listed it's not much use for offroading. Oziexplorer is only as good as the maps you have loaded in it and whilst pretty good, the size of the PDA screen does hinder you.
eBay is probably the best place. You can either put it together in pieces which I did or buy a complete as possible package. You'll certainly do it easily for $1000. Most won't have Oziexplorer which you will have to add. My crradle is by a NZ company called Free Cruiser. It has power and an external speaker. Just the thing to hear voice directions over the top of ACDC.

EMO - do you convert your own maps?
I have done it for ozi but cant find a converter to make TIFF images with packbit compression. I have got a image at 2.3GB at the moment.

you can get a new hp iqap 1940 w/ bluetooth (a nice basic unit on a proven platform) for $350 and a bluetooth gps for $120. Then you need a $60 powered holder (the free cruiser already mentioned). So somewhere around $500 for all the hardware
Stuff paying a grand for in car gps stuff!!! Software is free if you look around I could show you where to get it all (destinator, oziexplorer, mobile gps stuff )......... but I don't condone getting free software

No. I've got all of Vic at 1:100k scale which is pretty good. This is on a DVD and I think that it's about 3.5gb but split into 4 folders. I've also managed to pick up a number of the offroading areas like Toolangi, Wombat, Erica, Gembrook etc at 1:25k scale which is even better.
I bought an iPaq Rx1950 off eBay for $200 and a Magellan 315 handheld GPS for $130. I wanted the separate handheld for sailing since it is rugged and waterproof. The cable to connect and power both was $100. A 512Mb memory card was $25 new.
Use TomTom navigator for street routing (using the Ozzy Osborne voice of course!) and OziExplorer for bush travel.
Very happy with it - the Rx1950 is a compact unit.
Would recommend a bluetooth unit to save on the cable - but you will still need power cables...

I have an Ipaq 4150 which i found on the road near my house and got a Bluetooth gps for $100 to my door off ebay, a 1 gig sd card $56 to my door and a bt usb dongle $15 to my door and use ozi ce. The gps came with a power adapter that also powers/ charges the pda as well as the gps unit, i just need a cheap arse phone holder for the dash and maybe an external antenna for bush work to complete. If you do get a bt gps, make sure it has an external antenna socket.
go to the GPS OZ website and there is a program called ozi map grabber that can get maps off the web for any region you like for nada.

I have an Ipaq PDA/Phone and got a Bluetooth gps, a 1 gig sd card and use ozi explorer ce you can download it free of the web site and buy the reg for $40. The gps came with a power adapter, I got a holder for the windscreen that also powers/charges the pda. If you do get a bt gps, make sure it has an external antenna socket. I use the Auslig topo maps which are stored on the sd card.
Used this all over the Vic high country before easter and worked really well and gives you lots of details of tracks
I also bought Co-Pilot Pocket PC 5 for street nav and it work ok sometimes the directions are not always the quickest and shortest way to get there, but it beats having to try to get the wife to read maps

Just been having a bit of look at these lately but still not really up on it all. Has anyone tried any of the pda's with built in gps like the acer n35 or navman pin 570? How do they stack up?
I think the acer comes with destinator and the navman with "smart" road level guidance but do these programs have the option of marking your tracks offroad so you can see where you went last time as Emo said about the oziexplorer package? Also on a unit such as the navman...theres no reason why i cant download and use another guidance program such as oziexplorer is there?
Thanks for your help

Adobe Elements or Photoshop, Paintshop Pro all support it,being a licenced format you need to add the auslig.dll for the full version of ozi to support it,I'm not sure the CE vesion does support compessed Tiff images.nicbeer wrote:EMO - do you convert your own maps?

I use a O2 Xda Exec and BT338 bluetooth Gps reciever which is surf III, running Tomtom and Oziexplorer.
The PDA is also a 3G phone. Can pick one up on ebay for about $900.....considering its also the most cutting edge phone on the market at this time and costs less than a navman....its dam good way to go.
