td42 excess fuel consumption

Post by GURU »

G'day all,

When towing the buggy to tenterfield on the weekend I have found the fuel consumption very high. The vehicle use to be owned by a friend that towed 3 - 3.5 tonne boats around, he use to get around 580kms from a tank of fuel on a long haul. The fuel filter was full of crap and didn't have alot of guts now after changing the filter it runs heaps better and gets about 600kms out of a tank around town (not towning). while towing on the weekend (weight about 2.5 tonne) I could only manage to get 350kms max out of a tank. blowing lots of black smoke when up hills...

any ideas??

Do you put injector cleaner through it all the time??? The Toyota (don't beat me) injector cleaner is the best out there and always gives my beast a new lease on life. $15 for 500mls from you know where!

You can have your injectors recoed for under $100 each and then there like new. But with that many ks on it id get the pump done as well

Try giving a diesel specialist a call. Rankin Diesel in Bayswater, Victoria are the ones that informed me about the gauze filter in the injector pump ( see TD42 won't rev thread ) and I would reccomend them to anyone. It is usually $1000 approx. to pull your injector pump off, put a kit through it, bench test it and the injectors, and reco all of your injectors, and at 422k I reckon worth the money IMHO

did you try draining some fuel from your tank to see if there is any shit in the tank, which could have blocked your filter again, also check the gause filter in the banjo fitting at the pump inlet not all have this. by the way what is the air filter like???
i always start at the cheapest fix first.

Someone previous may have removed it! Or in my case the place that last did my pump failed to refit it.
