diy hawse fairlead ?

Has anyone made their own steel hawse fairlead for use with steel cable ?
Any reason why not to make one and buy one off the shelf ?

deinitely thought of doing this Nick, got access through dads engineering firm for cnc, lathes and machines and also probably couldve got one of the guys iv done some work experience for who do most of dads work to knock something up after looking at the prices of one out of aus, ~$115 or somewhere round there was what i was looking at buying off the shelf, but i picked up one off ebay for $32, so i guess we'll see how good it is when i get it tomorrow... :? it was from extremelimitsoffroad ebay store,

Yeah, i buoght one from some bloke on ebay as well. Did not match bolt holes and slot together so i gave it to a mate. He abused the s@$#%^& out of me cuase it didn't fit. So be aware. Decided to put the CNC mill to work and chomp some out. Should be ready in a couple of days,(other work on mill), for sale.

Be nice to see Dave.
I just bought one, cast iron for $95 since the roller fairlead hung really low below the TJM T15 bar I have.

I am a little worried about steel cable with this and the friction heat but have been told it will be OK.

My old man has a mill and lathe so i can machine anything i need, will 10mm plate be ok to use with cable ? If i can get one for similar price off ebay it would be easier than making one i guess.

Good luck!,you need the right tool$,I got some from sky manufacturing in the USA when they first got`em $50ea, or you can get buy some elbow`s and some tube to make one

Cast Hawse leads are the only ones suitable for steel cable. They dont get as hot and friction is not a problem. If you use steel such as mild or an alloy steel it will gaul up and heat the cable very fast.

What about for plasma will mild be good enough?

Should be fine as long as it has no sharp edges. We run Plasma style line around tube work with no problems. the Smoother the surface the better for rope.

HI Dave, are these ally jobs you are making ? if so what material spec and hardness ?

I was going to make one at my work but we dont have any suitable material in stock at the moment, dunno how long i'd have to wait.
I need to replace my warn rollers because it has plasma fitted.
So, what sort of bikkies are you thinking ?

The HDPE ones would be the go for Plasma l think.

I made mine from 316 stainless steel its 25mm thick and has i large smooth radius on both side to ensure no potential for sharp edges. Its been on for 4 years now and the rope with dirt on it has lapped it real smooth now so friction is minimal as its has not worn at all. If the material is wearing that means its heating up, so that needs to be avoided.

Sorry about the delay folks. Brad , we will use T6 structural alloy and no i have not sorted out a price yet, but want to try and keep it under 100 for forum users. I will post it in Misc. items for sale

make a foam patern and get a few cast, there is a few people around shop that could help, it is an easy pattern

Genuine Warn Hawse (Cast Steel) should be avilable from your local 4wd shop for around $65. If they don't have them, tell them to call Ateco.
