Shabby start but not glow plugs

Post by Rough60 »

Hi all,
The last couple of weeks my HJ60 has been starting on what seems 4 or 5 cylinders with a fair bit of smoke coming out the back, checked the glow plugs and and wiring and all seems ok. You can feel the other 1 or 2 cylinders kick in after about 5 - 10 seconds, I havn't tried glowing it twice before startup to see if that helps yet. I was wondering if it could be something like low compression or just the cold mornings (about 5-6 deg).
Cheers.

on older 60 series you wait after the glow light goes

and wait till you here a click from engine bay then start

see how that works

mine does exactly the same thing, im yet to work out the cause, if you do get it worked out please let me know what it is, luckily for me, my 60 is only a weekend basher and its lucky to get used once a fourtnight, sometimes it sits for over 1 month unstarted so it doesnt bother me a great deal, but it would still be nice to know what it is.

Could be glow plugs(pull them out and test them individually) bad injectors or low compression (blow-by leaky valve etc)

i know mine is definatly not the glow plugs, because I have replaced them all, when I found one dead, it was starting even worse with the dead glow plug, but it still does it even with brand new plugs, and I have since then retested all the new plugs.

Also make sure you clean the bus bar (alloy bar connecting all glow plugs) and connections to glow plugs. I have seen a few with bad connections to one or two glow plugs causing the same problem.

I've been suspect that this is something to do with a tune or service as I changed mechanic 18 months ago, my 60 runs a bit more spritely after a service these days, but I've had this issue since.

Never used to miss a beat back in the day, even in winter.

Goes away after a minute or so tho, never been too concerned, heck I'll probably want a new 4wd some day and I don't think the HJ60 will give in.

Then again i average 7000k's and 2 oil canges a year. :P I'll need new tyres in 10 years :)
