I have External beadlocks and prefer them over the Second Airs i used to run. They protect and strengthen the rim, protect valves/hubs and look Bling if finished off well :D

But they are not legal.....so, theres a start.

And last i saw, Chris was selling the rings.

Im in the process of drawing some 17" variety up plus brakts for shock mounting ...brkts for linkin out rigs and such

but unsure of price at the moment I do however know that 5mm m/s sheet 1200 x2400 costs about $200 a sheet and the rings I'll be getting made are 6mm(205) so the sheets will be dearer again plus then you have set up fees for the laser then the cost of the laser cutting so the price per each does add up particulary when you are lucky to get a 6 wheel set from 1 sheet ;)

Chris is doing complete sets of weld on beadlock kits, as well as all sorts of Laser cut goodies. Also can't wait to see his new rock bars he's tinkering with.

Yep i'm doing them!

I will have a website up and running shortly selling all sorts of goodies in the way of beadlocks, rim protectors, brackets off all kinds.

I will be doing 15" 16" and 17" beadlocks all cut from 6mm mild steel.
As well as this i have a huge array of designs for tube bars, the zook transfer rings, gussets, tabs for mounting all sorts of stuff, shocks etc, Hilux rear disc conversion plates, IFS steering box chassis plates. Custom designed stuff can easily be sorted.

I will have all the pricing up soon, but if you've got something in mind in the meantime pm or email me.

If you are after baedlocks for alooys, try Ian Boetcher's in Ipswich.
Lots of speedway cars use alloy beadlocks.

Nearly every 4x4 shop makes external beadlocks these days.

There are good and bad ones.

Good ones will have a true seat for the bead to sit in. This bead sholud follow the profile of the tyre`s bead. The 2 rings shouldn`t be just 2 flat plates of steel/alloy.
Plus the inner and outer rings should have a small rib on them that centres the outer ring to the inner ring, this centering should not be done via the bolts alone. What happens here if its all done via the bolts is over time (I`m talking years) the movement will snap bolts, not many bead locks made have this feature as its not that big of a deal as normally when you replace tyres every few years you replace all the bolts at the same time.
The more bolts the better.
The thinker the better.

Now in saying all this I have not had a close look at any of the bead locks around today and can not say who`s are the best or worst at the moment.

I am sort of happy with my beadlocks but they do not have the locating lip I have spoken about above. They also need to have silicon put over the weld on the rim, this is done from the inside and is done before the tyre goes on. If they don`t have the silicon on them then 3 of the 4 leak very badly. The beadlocks I have are the worst I have seen or heard of for this leak if not siliconed.

Yeah, one of mine was leaking bad when i first got 'em, i bunged some of that steel putty in the crack where it was leaking from. They're all sweet now.

I've folded two rings on rocks/logs too. smashed 'em back with a mash hammer- SWEET !

Aus 4wd do an external beedlock rim , i have been using them for a few years now. they are a pressed steel outer ring with a lip to hold the tyre and a steel inner lip. they also put a ring on the inside of the rim to stop damage if required.
they sell spare outer rings aswell incase you smash one on a rock.

Chris the outer ring is made out of about 20mm cast alloy.

fourbys in brisbane sell external's they can also make the rims too. up too 17's as well i think. not bad price either. i just had 5 of 15x10 rims made with external beadlocks, a piece of 16mm round bar welded on the inside bead (stiffin the wheel and help prevend dents and damage) made with 10mm centers insted of six and set for 1 5/8" back space for my cruiser for under $450 a wheel powercoated.

Chris
Mate, i had one got peeled back when a log that been used for someone's road-building use flicked straight into ring with 4by at full noise and locker engaged. This one had to be removed and panel-beaten straight.

The other was roaring up a loose, shaley rock hill and i only noticed it when i stopped. Air was leaking. Coupla taps with the persuada and it was all sweet.

No they're not stainless, 4mm steel profiled to fit bead. In those two instances i'm glad the ring was there otherwise the rim would've been f**ked and probably the tyre too (and that would make me cry  )

here are the beadlocks i'm doing.
They are nothing fancy, just 2 x 6mm mild steel plates laser cut. My beadlocks will come with a centering, anti-coning ring (a strip of flat bar that is to be welded to the inner ring and stops the outer ring coning inwards as the bolts are tensioned.

Remember though, external beadlocks are illegal for street use and should be for off road use only.

I will soon have pricing for 15, 16 & 17" steel wheels.
Aluminium rings will be sorted shortly and for the ultimate in strength and bling, stainless steel outer rings will also be available, at a cost. :D

Here's some pics of the ones that are on my buggy and soon to be on the Mogrover.
