what fuel economy can you expect from a 4bdit and where would i look for conversion parts for a 5 speed 85 Rangie ???

I disagree John, IME they seem to hold up reasonably well, the one in my truck lasted 300000km before needing a rebuild (done by Mal Story at po's expense), and the one in a mate's 110 outlasted the engine!!! (but admittedly the engine died prematurely at about 300k km). Back on to fuel consumption, my 4BD1 uses 9-11L/100km, depending on how hard I am puhing it on the highway.

I'm getting 19 mpg towing a 1.2 ton poptop van at highway speeds. uphill and into headwinds, it seems to stay the same.
Without the van, about 24 mpg driven sensibly.(My wife says I can't drive sensibly...)
If I wound the fuel back I would be getting about 28 mpg, but it wouldn't be as much fun...
BTW, I'm on holidays and the RR is still at home waiting for its Allison auto conversion.
LS400 is nice to drive though...

I will soon be selling an Isuzu MSA-5P gearbox which has been modified to fit an 85 Rangie.
It's had an extended shifter grafted onto it to protrude in the same place as your factory box. WIll come with an adaptor shaft to an LT230 gearbox.
To fit and work it will need:
1. An Isuzu 4B series engine.
2. The back housing off an LT77 box.
3. A 75mm aluminium adaptor plate which I can provide all the dimensions for.
I may be able to sell part #3 as well, depending on how my plans proceed.
New bearings before installation would be a good idea. No noise when driven but it's not as tight as the MSA-5G I'm replacing it with.
I recently installed a 1:1 ratio LT230, I now get 11km/l on a flat level run. That's a hair over 30MPG.
Was getting approx 9.5 km/l with the 1.2:1 ratio LT230.

Got the 3 inch mandrel bent side exit fitted just before I left for work, sorry no photo's till I get back. It goes much better off the mark, taking far less time to spool, and expelling heat much more efficiently, the bulkhead is cool after a decent run, missus delighted. Even better, it sounds like a military tank, obsolutely wicked!. Oddly enough with the side windows up, the vehicle is much quieter than with the old standard exhaust!. Initial fuel figures look promising, as yet I have not adjusted the pump, on a run across to Einsleigh Pub, via Georgetown, and back via The Lynd, consumption was just under 12ltrs/100k, and we had the vehicle fully loaded - not bad...can't wait to get back & head back up the Cape for a spot of fishing ....
