Experience with HM Gem Engines

Has anyone had any experience with HM Gem remanufactured engines? Apparently they had some quality problems a while ago but my mechanic recons that they got their act together in the last few years.
I'm looking at getting one put in my Landcruiser.

I've heard alot of rotten stories. Alot of people refer to them as Hit and Miss. Though i can't comment on whether they've cleaned up their act, i wouldn't invest the $6k+ for a diesel through them (need to do injector system for warranty)...


Having said that i've had a HM 202 in a VK for 5-6 years, no probs except for some detonation issues - could be too higher comp, or just bad ignition timing (never had it checked out)

i have had a 2F petrol hm gem in my 60 series for about 2 years now and it has been perfect

whenever i go off road i rev the ring out of it and have had no issues yet

ive done aprox 20,000kms so far, no leaks or damage yet

but we have had issues with them as we use them in work, we have had some problems with parts and have sent a few things back under warranty

we do not use them anymore for this reason we use reback engines i think they are called in QLD, brissy area i think and they seem good so far

Dont know bout nowdays but bout 10 year ago i had an 88 astra with injected 1.8 in it (old camira engine i think) The car went back about 4 times in 2 weeks as the engines continued to have oil pressure problems. When the last one went in they told me from the minute i leave to flog the p#@s out of it . So i felt obliged to. Motor stayed good and never a problem from then on.

i have allways found the machine work very good simply because its all cnc and a 2 year old could do it. but have found clenlynes and asembly lacking. i still recon there hit and miss. had plenty with gunk inside head bolts ect

Put one in my fj 40 a couple years ago.Inj VNSS motor.Was fine.Didnt have it for that long after I put it in but didnt have any dramas with it.It was a lot cheaper than any place I could find too

fitted one of there motors about 3 year ago to a vechile and within a day it had a headgasket problem

it was actually leaking water in the cylinder badly

when i stripped it apart i found it had 2 head gaskets on it due to the head had been shaved so much

when i notified them they got the eng number ,the reply was that there computer wasn't showing that that motor was fitted with 2 head gaskets

they just replaced the head and a new gasket


have had better luck with redlands motors tho

Are these the "Repco" reconditioned engines?

I knew a mechanic (about 15 years ago) who worked for Repco, reconditioning stuff. He was quite happy to recommend Repco parts, but was adamant their engines should be avoided.

Don't know if they're the same thing.

Redlands do seem to be the go lately in Bris.

we got a motor put into our bravo it lasted 6mths, motor was f#*ked started again with a privte macanic and no problems so far.
