Sudders only during takeoff or all the time?

During T/O: clutch glazed/worn out.

All the time: wheels out of balance, wheel alignment, driveshaft out of balance, bent halfshaft. many others....

Sounds like clutch if it's just on takeoff.

Could be a damaged friction plate or damage to the pressure plate or flywheel.

Hey mate i have a 4runner that shudders bad on take off, then drives good. Suspect the flywheel, may need machining and i will do a clutch at the same time. Can,t slip the clutch [ been like this for months  ]

Did the clutch get hot at any stage EG a bit of sliping when out 4x4ing. Sounds like you have got hard spots on the flywheel or pressure plate or both.
Best solution would be to to replace clutch and pressure plate and get the flywheel machined.

Mines got a shudder in the patrol in first and in reverse, and really bad in 4low reverse. The experts have told me engine mounts or clutch for mine.

Well engine mounts are fine, however after driving in 1.2m of water not to long ago I noticed it got really bad, then settled down again after truck had dried out. After a clutch test, have decided to ride it out untill I do the clutch later on.
God made reverse for tailgaters!!

If you want to test if the clutch is slipping, the easiest way is to start off and get the car moving like in 1st, then put it in 4th or 5th, let the clutch out (engine will be struggling), then put your foot down, engine should slowly pick up revs for a few seconds, then revs should climb unequal to road speed, ie youre still goin slow but engine is revving high.
If you want to know how to test your clutch with an automatic, just ask.

Should also check your clutch master & slave cylinders for fluid leaks.

Rear main or g/box input seals leak oil onto clutch plate will cause shudders to.
cheers

Pulux my clutch shudders only when cold, then is fine.
Did the flywheel get machined when the new clutch was fitted?

Frankenyota- I am unsure of the history of this engine besides full rebuild 12 mths ago.. Is fine when warm too. Though I'm thinking it may not be the clutch because it only does it on takeoff and shudders the same peed regardless of revs when slipping.. Just changed from 33's to 35's and got slightly worse. Gives me the shits but, feels like i'm gonna bounce off the road.

I'd go with a little oil on the clutch coming from engine or g box if it only happens on takeoff. fairly easy to repair if you can take the g/bpx out yurself or motor for that matter, and then once you've done that you will know if you have to replace the clutch as well plus a good time to have a good look at your mounts, bearings etc

Won't a LSD shudder more when turning?
Pulux i have to ease my clutch out in the mornings or it shudders and then thumps. If your clutch slips then maybe it's stuffed?
When i did my engine swap i put the clutch it came with in, looked alright.
I have one piece shaft & no LSD.
Hey Nat84 maybe let a mechanic drive your car and see what they reckon? Does a raider have swivel hub bearings?
Let us know what you find.

Whan I started to do the build up on my lux it had 31's,then went straight to 35's & did exactly what you described 'bum humped' everywhere.....until I changed the diff ratios, then it was all good again. Also had a crack in my bellhousing & did a similar thing, everytime the engine would torque up taking off it would open the crack & pull the engine from the gearbox slightly, thus causing the clutch & flywheel alignment to be out.......'uneven' contact if you follow.

Whats a good way to check the centre bearing? Would the cause be excess play in it? Would the centre bearing be the cause of shuddering between 0 and 10km/h only when cold? It's bearable except when its happening :?

the only when cold thing sounds very very much like a clutch problem. Oily or glazed clutch.

Had this exact problem. Should say Have :?

Changed centre bearing, all UJs etc but still there. No rear main leak or clutch slip.

Just live with it now until the V6 goes in, but my money is on the clutch alignment or flywheel. My clutch is only a year old, but may not have been fitted right.
