Oil burn in 2.8 3L motor

Post by trains »

Hi chaps,

Weve just got back from our trip in the center doing the west and east McDonald Rangers, Palm valley, and kings canyon etc etc etc.
Did 5223kms.
Oil was just over the full mark before we left. As I did an oil change (yep another one) before we left.

Monitored it each day as we went along, and it slowly dropped in level.
Its now 2/3 the way down between the High and Low mark.

Is this excessive oil consumption for a 2.8, or do they normally chew thru a bit of oil.
Its got 243 000 on the clock.

Just trying to get an idea if its normal with these motors.
I think its a bit high myself, and would have preferred to see a 5mm drop at most in this time.

Using BP vanellus 5w 40.
cheers

Trains

and Yes, we had a ball, saw some great places, met some great people, and really enjoyed ourselves.
got about 9-11 Lts / 100km depending on what we were doing.
Mostly around the 9-10.

I'm no oil expert but I'd say the 5W40 is the problem. Try a higher viscosity oil.

I run Castrol GTX diesel in my 2.8 with 300,000kms and get absolutely no consumption at all....

i would say thats normal. 5000km is normal oil change, i almost always notice a small drop after 4000-5000 kms or so. funny enough it never drops any further. i simply put it down to normal end of life of the oil.

If you're not having to add any oil between 5000km changes I wouldn't worry. 2/3rds between full and low is probably only ~600ml.
