I have exactly the same problem with my 4runner. From 1st to 2nd is usually OK but from 3rd back to 2nd is a problem. You need to tickle it in.... sort of double clutch it. Tried changing to thinner oil but still happens.
I just changed my rear diff centre to 4.8 (from 4.5...... need a front one now) and the problem is still there but is much better. I thought it would have made it worse.
Like simkell said...... I think its the syncro.

If it only hapens when it is cold 9 times out of 10 it is because of the oil is in need for a change to something a bit thinner. My 80 has this problem now I just have to get motivated to do something about it.

Sounds like thinner oil may be the go. Mine has whatever the caryard threw at it before putting it on the block, could be anything really.
I will try some new standard viscosity oil and hopefully it will help.
It is a worry when your gearbox does not perform as well as you would like and expensive if it up and Sh-ts itself.
Cheers Struth.

Just as a point of interest..........
My clutch master cylinder died the other day. Installed a new one (non-genuine $89.00) and it improved my gear change into 2nd a bit more. The problem did not go away 100%........ but it is better.
I didn't realise how bad my clutch was generally operating as I was so used to it. Much smoother action now

The work cost me a total of $187.00 including 1 hour labour, fluid and the master cylinder. I have a good machenic that looks after me (although he is a LPG installer so he is as busy as at the moment) I got non genuine as the Toyota master cylinder was $300+.
Let me stress the going into 2nd problem did not totally go away.... but it did improve it. However, the clutch feels sooooo much better now.
I am not recomending to run out and do it, but if you clutch action has been a bit suspect (dropping to the floor on ocation.... especially when hot) then I would get it checked out.

oil
Well done my gearbox oil change and used synthetic gear oil and it made the change a lot better but not perfect. As the 80s use 3.9 lts of oil I draind 500ml and added 500ml of auto trans oil and what a diffrance,
I've never had such a smooth change. By the way I seeked advice from 3 machanic shops before I did it. Let me know how you go.

Definately has to be synchro, this is the gear you really give hell changing to get off the mark or if ya see Harold Scruby crossing the road.
Seems to happen a bit in trucks between 2nd and 3rd, same deal. Well thats how it was explained to me and it makes sense.
Double shuffle between first and second, simply pull the clutch out and push it back in while you are changing up and give a few revs as you change down. If it then is still a pita get it repaired.
