Brake issues

Post by Steve'o »

i'm redoing my back brake lines at the moment, to tidy them up (were made to short originally), and the brakes have never been that crash hot (hilux diffs, disc front, drum rear). but tonight, i clamped the flexible line at the back, and removed the rear solid lines, but had to move the car, so thought i'd take it easy, cause the brakes would be crapper than before. but they were brilliant with the rears clamped off, stopped on a dime like a new car.

just wondering wat could cause this? the rear drums are all new (drums, pads, cylinders), and were adjusted and bled last week (for the 3-4th time in the quest for better brakes). the only things i can think of, would be the flexy line is too long (650mm odd) and is givin a spongy pedal and doughy brakes, or the bias adjuster is all outta whack

anyone got any ideas? cause at the moment, its tempting to leave the bloody clamp there

bias adjuster has been moved to chassis, so is now adjustable by bolt, not the weight on the suspension ;)

oozuk-they've been adjusted up a couple of times now with no success

if your master cylinder is a tandem then i doubt it is your load bias. you will have a firmer pedal when blocked cause there is no movement of wheel cylinders or expansion of flexible lines. the load bias valve only sets the maxium amount of brake pressure to the rear according to the load in the back, to stop your rear locking befor the front. sounds more like your brake shoes are out of adjustment or there is air in the system.

i get a similar thing on the sierra sometimes. adjust the rear shoes properly and bleed your brakes from furtherest line to closest line from the masterclyinder.

yeah just did it too mine, its the bias valve..... Where it goes onto the bracket on the axel you just make a spacer up out of flat bar with the length of it the same length as the lift which spaces it back to the position its ment to be at.

.....well thats what i think it would be anyway. :)
