Which Surf or 4-Runner to get???

Just last week there was a 1995 model 4runner RV6 (that's the 3 litre V6 engine, no electric windows or mirrors, just standard) for sale at a Tempe 2nd hand car dealer for $4999. Apparently it lasted on the lot for all of 2 hours after trade in though :(. I missed it.

ANy1 know how much a std 22r 90 model is worth these days. has ARB bar, rebuilt motor, 120 amp alt, etc

The back end of mine is basically the same as yours at the moment. The runners look a lot better than I thought they would with no rear bar. It certainly gives you a much better departure angle. I have always thought that you would be able to craft something from a Hilux rear bar. Post it up if you do it
For me, I do a lot of towing and camping with the family so the Kaymar is great....... Especially for accessing the roof basket(some do not like the No. plate position). It wasn?t cheap but I have had it for years...... Fuel savings paid for it.I just want a 2inch body lift and ball joint spacers on top of my 3inch suspension. Then lift up the gas tank and I will be happy (I?m sure many have said that before adding a few more inches).

Dont waste your money on the ifs save it and get the ifs cut out.
The body lift is so easy your mother could do it the hardest part of yours will be raising that nice rear bar you got there and the bonus of the body lift is you now have the bolts to raise the tank.And while your at it raise the engine 3.5" so that low sitting transfer case is nice and high
If you dont have panel damage you ain't trying hard enough

I had a 2.4TD and had problems galor. Bought this about 8 months ago and enjoying it. This is the SR5 Limited V6 soon to be duel fuel. I have also recently changed my front bullbar to a steel winch bar.

I guess some serious points would be,
Which has more power and torque V6 or 2.8 TD. I would be interested to know the figures myself, I beleive the V6 is 109 Kw but no idea on torque.
Do 4 Runners have 2.8 Td or is this Surf only.
The surfs have a lot of bang for bucks re electrics.
Backup on Aus delivered 4 Runners is better from toyota dealers. I have heard that they get a bit stressed when you say Surf.
I think insurance is cheaper for 4 runners as well.
Are there any differences in low range gearing between models.
I have found the V6 to be reliable as (14 yrs old) starts everytime first time and never plays up. Are the diesals as user freindly.
Try to get something with factory flares because they cover some pretty wide rubber.

surf v 4runner
I've been into the hiluxes and surfs for a few years now and, there isn't much in it if you ask me. I use mine 85% road/commute everyday use, 10% beach, 5% mud/offroad use. and the surf (93 2.4 td auto) does it well, 10l/100km fuel economy, auto is fantastic in the sand, I rate it as the most comfortable user friendly 4x4 for the money I've ever owned. It seems as easy to drive around as a 93 corolla, looks the same inside.
I bought mine off ebay for $4000 with no motor as it had been destroyed by previous owner, I bought a writeoff for $1500 and fitted the motor, while it was out, I put new timing belt and idlers on, water pump, removed EGR completely and cleaned the black soot and gunk out of the intake manifold. I fitted a plain 4 core radiator and a separate trannie cooler to fix the overheating issues that everyone bangs on about. I fitted a set of freewheeling hubs as well just to save the CV's and fuel.
I looked a 4 runners, but by the time I put flares on, rear wheel carrier etc it was too dear.
So if you want off road ability go the solid axle LN106 dual cab, if you want simple tech go the 4 runners, but if you have a degree of mechanical aptitude and common sense as well as liking all the fruit, fast glass, sunroof, flares, alloys, etc and don't really need the extreme offroad ability go the surf.
As for parts, not an issue really, bit of a furphy by the "old cars are best" crowd, nearly all the parts are the same and there is a great website surf australia forum with heaps of great info.
