Can't get 5th gear in GU

Post by MJP »

Hi All,

I was driving down the freeway last night, Just cruising in 5th, and it popped out of gear (hasn't done that before). When i tried to put it back into 5th it was grinding teeth. Pulled over and tried putting it into 5th while stopped and it goes in ok but get off the clutch and its grinding teeth and going nowhere. Still went into all other gears ok but i could hear a slight grinding of teeth when in 1st and reverse.
Oh, its a 2000 GU 4.2 td with 186,000 on the clock.

Is this common with these? I thought these gearboxes were tuff as nails?

Does this sound like a gearbox rebuild? Sounds to me like 5th gear has slipped out of alignment or something.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

I'm no expert, but apparently the early ones like yours had a weak 5th.I'd say your probably up for a box rebuild.Apparently they can beef it up for you so it won't happen again.Someone on here should know more.

My 4.8 petrol let 4th gear syncro go at 40,000 klm's - fixed under warranty.

There have been others advising problems with the 4.2 g/box.

Don't no the full details but apparently around that year the gearbox was manufactured with incorrect tollerences. Nissan were repairing these under warranty. Contact Nissan would be the go.

These gear boxs had a weak 5th gear, it would strip the spline on the main shaft that mounts 5th gear. thay have a replacment 5th gear and main shaft that is stronger, as the old one was not tight enough on the shaft and would chatter untill failure. Nissan where replacing these under warranty as it is a common fault, check with them, Cheers Phill.

As mentioned above. This happened to my parents GU on the way to Sydney, shaft stripped the spline, they fitted an upgraded shaft and gear etc they paid for it themselves and cost a couple of g's from memory. I would definately visit the Nissan Dealer before you get it fixed, otherwise it is going to cost you a few $$.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I will give Nissan a try in the morning and hopefully get it done without it costing me an arm and a leg. That would be great!! I could really do with getting it done as a warranty job as I don't have a spare few G's laying around for that! Would much rather spend that sort of money on a winch and diff locks ;)

Thanks,
Mark

This has also quite common in the 3.0's also, 5 and 4th tend to strip. Replaced under warranty.

the problem was on the mainshaft where 5th gear sits is only half splined and it has a machined spacer infront of it and on the revised shaft it is fully splined and the gear is longer to take up where the spacer used to go, i used to be a tech at a nissan dealer and did quite a few of these box's nissan were even doing them out of warranty for free because it was a known problem

Thanks again for the replies.

I have taken it to my local Nissan dealer and hope to get their decision in the next few days. The local dealer has put in a claim and we are waiting on a response from Nissan.

Will let you know how i go. Fingers crossed!

UPDATE

Nissan have knocked back my claim on this as the car is 6 years old and has 186,000k's. "Too old, too many k's" ..... BUGGER!

quote for repair from Nissan ("getting a good deal from dealer") $2237.70

or for a brand new box $3615.00 fitted. Doesn't seem too bad for a brand new box but i think it'll be a rebuild and save the $1400.

revised Update.

Nissan have agreed to cover the cost of parts (5th gear and mainshaft only) which reduces the price by a couple of hundred dollars. Better than nothing and enough to make me agree to have Nissan fix it. It beats the lowest quote i got from a gearbox place and includes all the bearings and seals being replaced.
Also means i keep the servicing with Nissan as it has been so far which i think is the only reason they agreed to help me out. The car is 3 years past warranty and 85000k's over as well.

Thanks for the input and hope nobody else has to do this.
Cheers,
Mark
