aza building a custom 4WD is a very personal thing and what workes for one bloke might not necessarily be the best thing for you. it takes experimentation, small changes and drives to see how it goes, it's a slow and potentially expensive process. sure you can drive into [insert name of 4WD chop shop here] and hand over a fistful of dollars and get a suspension system that works fairly well, but there is always room for improvement, and tyo get it right, you have to put in the hours yourself, driving, testing, tweaking. imnsho, you should buy something cheap and disposable for your first 4WD and not spend too much modifying it - get it out there, drive it to death, learn HOW to drive a 4WD in the bush, then when you roll it and write it off you have plenty of experience and you'll know what you want for your new, custom beast.

spend a couple of grand on a trashed sierra and go through the pain of changing everything in it yourself, get some hands on experience in repairs and modifications on a truck small enough that it's possible to change the clutch yourself -try lifting a cruiser gearbox back into position by yourself, or lifting the head off a 3B without dropping it into the deck! - these things are easy as on a little zook and not too painful on a hilux but impossible on a cruiser

blah blah rant rant.

what are you going to do when you trash your new BJ after owning it a week and your insurance won't pay because you killed it offroad and you owe mummy and daddy ten grand for a pile of rusting steel?

bubs car costs about 9-10 grand and snafs about 8, its his first car, has he trashed it. ok how about this for an idea, get a bj, mod it abit so its mainly a poser, take it off road but dont try hard shit, get the experience offroad by going on night runs, etc. hey i know this will be my first car and i might destroy it and shit or sell it in a couple of yrs but hey this is the car i want ;) i see what ur trying to get at and mayb i will trash the bj but hey thats my problem if i do, and i defantly aint getting a zook, no offense to u zook drivers :P all i really want to begin with is a bj73, with a nice poser paint job with lift and 35's, but i think i will have money left after that, thats what i want to firgure out, what to do with the left over $$$

Better still get a 4x4 and get the brakes ,oil leaks, swivels, clutch and all those boring things before you start bolting good stuff onto a unreliable POS.Its a bit like doing an extension to a house while the termites are eating the other end.I know thats sounds boring but you cant pose in something the cops have put off the road.

and make up your mind if you want a poser truck with nice paint or if you want something you can take off road - have a look at what any of us drive hard off road, there's no pretty paintwork there. good paint is a waste of money on a 4WD if you're ever going to drive it on a trail.

also what rosco says is very important - any 15+ year old truck you buy will NEED work on steering, driveline, brakes, engine etc, and your money is far better spent fixing up the bits that need fixing - for a truck to be safe off road, everything needs to work properly, especially brakes and steering.

u think i have that much money  , i might be able to aford the locker ;) , for starters the car will mainly be a poser but will get taken off road a fair bit but not driven really hard. i have figured that i will have about 3500$ - 4000$ to spend on mods, so i might do what u say bubs :finger:

Aza why not get a gemini to learn how to change gears check oil ect.DO interesting mods like a 10ft cb antenna with a fluffy dash mat and magic tree in every corner. You would be the envy of all the other year 8s at your school. Maybe you could use your gemini as a class project.

What do you mean by "atm" Does it have to be a 73 series. There is plenty of 40 and 45 around with plenty of life and they still kick more ass than 98% of all 4wd. 4-5 grand would get a real nice one possibly with extras like big tyres ,suspension lifts. They are among the best 4x4 ever built and what give TOYOTA their name.Girls love a soft top 40.Youll be struggling to keep them out of the front seat . I reckon a 45 soft top would be the coolest thing you could have. There is one on ebay although expensive because of the mods you get an idea of whats possible.
