Testing for electrolysis in new radiator

Post by nickw86au »

Hi guys,

I've just replaced my radiator in my '89 sierra as it had a crack up the top where the hose joined to the tank. (details here http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... 733#899733 ) - I figured that it was pretty old anyway, and so just replaced it.

In the instruction booklet it said to check for electrolysis by connecting the a meter to the -ve terminal on the battery and dipping the +ve probe into the coolant. I don't have a meter that is able to test the small currents involved (0.05V, or 50 millivolts). Is it worth

a) buying a meter to check it
b) going to the local autoelectrician and getting them to check it, or
c) dont worry about it cause it was just a crack and probably caused by shaking around in a swb leaf-sprung car?

Thanks for you replies

nick.

go to bunnings and buy a meter - they have ones for $6 in the electrical section - it is a bit of gear you need.

thats just the range setting, that setting increases sensitivity so you should be able to pick up 0-200mV no worries.
