Reducing transfer ratio
As the topic says Is is worth tracking down a 1l box? Do they make a real difference? Is worth spending more for rock hoppers or those sorts of things? Went out with a guy with rockhoppers and i now notice how much i really need them! Any help will be greatly appreciated. THANKS

They do work well, but t-case gears would be better.
Mine is a 1.3 in a 1.0litre zook, so I have a 1.0 t-case
On 30's and 31's it was great, with my 4:1 stock diffs.
With the 32's is wasn't quite enough, so I fitted 4:9 diffs which is a touch low on road.
Price will determine if it is worth fitting.

Well i got the front and rear lockers and now i'm up to the gears! I wont do the 1l thing if it only gives you 12% lower doesn't really seem worth it to me. A guy i was talking to said it would be the same as series 1 rockhoppers. But obviously not.
It was just that we were in rocks and he was ideling in first with no trouble on 31's (series 3) and i was on my 30's sliping the clutch and bouncing over them all!
Certainely need something. I don't mind paying for them i was just wondering if the 1l case did much. THANKS FOR THE HELP AND KEEP THE IDEAS COMING IN

Thanks for that! I searched and that came up but it all seems like hard work from what the guy was saying it should just bolt straight in. I think i'll go for the rock hoppers. Can you get the series 3(apparently the lowest theyve got) any were or only the series 4? Thanks for the help

I'd go for Marks 4wd gearmaster gears, good reputation and Aussie built.
I believe they are 5:1 and will be my choice on the next zook.
Next choice would be Calmini Gears from USA. I don't trust Rockhoppers anymore, too mant stories ( no proof tho )

you may be able to find series 3 second hand
series 4 are supose to be toughter
i checked s3 to s4 and the gears didnt mesh so there definatly different

Will probably go for the marks ones or rock hoppers. What happens to the rock hoppers? Have heard the Marks ones are VERY good any idea on what there worth? Are the calmini ones cheaper, better, lower why are they good? Thanks again.

I used to have the RH series 1, but after a failure i now use the Calmini 5.14's Running standard WT diff ratio's and gearbox, they work great with 32 inch swampers. Have given them heaps more than i gave the RH's, and they have held up fine.

I would prefer the extra after purches security that comes with buying something in Australia with a warranty. The marks hit is a bit pricey for the reduction it offers but if it turns out to be unbreakable then im sure it will attract many buyers. when your mate said the 1L is the same gearing as a R1 he would have been talking about high range only. For high range they are both 12% lower but low range the 1L is still 12% whereas the R1 are about 90%.
When deciding which ratio to get for 30's/31's just look at the high range reduction. I run series 3 which are 22% in high and 170% in low on 30's. High range is fine..a touch low for highway cruising but you get by fine...low is awesome. with my 31 centis high range was pretty much spot on. Need to balance out an easy top speed for cruising against enough torque to be able to push those tyres up hills...my 31's were the upper limit for this IMO. I would be looking for something with high reduction of around 18-22% and as low as you can get....can never be too low..idle everything and always take 2nd 3rd or 4th up hills if getting too much torque and wheelspin

how can you tell if you've got reduction gears or not?

If low isnt crash hot, then my guess is not gearing mods, as with any crawler gears on only 31's it will be well noticable. You can get different ratios for diffs by fitting vitata CW&P or importing from states.

Correct, as you are only replacing the Crown wheel and pinion, not the hemisphere that contains the lockers. But, the ratio is constant, as in it will only lower both high range and low range by a certain percentage. Where as crawler gears will lower you high range say 18% (allow for high range road driving with larger tyres), and also lower you low range by a much larger percentage (say 127%) so you can crawl much better. Depends on what you use the zook for, and how you like the car to drive.

That 127% is the low in a calmini 5.14 gearset (transfer gears). What im trying to say is that with diff gears, both your low and hi will drop by the same percentage, where as with transfer gears the high will drop slightly, which allows you to handle bigger tyres easier for road/trail driving. Your low will drop considerably though making crawling much easier and controlled (and your clutch happy too). I went for crawler gears before a diff ratio change, but then i dont intend to have zook diffs under my rig much longer
