5th Gear
5th Gear
I was talking to my mate yesterday and he said that the patrol 5th gear is not suitable for towing while the landcruiser 5th gear can due to its postion in the box.Is this correct? I thought there was only a weakness in the early GU 4.2td gear boxes. I am just curiouse as i am going up north to Shark Bay in WA, and i will be towing a boat.

meh, mine was a 99 model, turbo deisel, hiflow turbo and front mount intercooler, I have heard about 5th gear issues, but have only ever known one that went bang and it was a 3ltrbogged wrote:Numerous of the early GU box's had 5th gear issues.Rem 22250 wrote:I have heard the same but only in the 3lt's but not in the 4.2's but I could be wrong.
I wouldnt think positioning in the box would make a difference, since the issue was with a shaft, nothing to do with position
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
theres been more thn that on this board, try EO or the patrol listTiny wrote:meh, mine was a 99 model, turbo deisel, hiflow turbo and front mount intercooler, I have heard about 5th gear issues, but have only ever known one that went bang and it was a 3ltrbogged wrote:Numerous of the early GU box's had 5th gear issues.Rem 22250 wrote:I have heard the same but only in the 3lt's but not in the 4.2's but I could be wrong.

no dought, but it doesnt mean there is a big problem, or 5th cant be used for towing, it just means that is a chance of a manafacturing fault in the shaft or something like that.bogged wrote:theres been more thn that on this board, try EO or the patrol listTiny wrote:meh, mine was a 99 model, turbo deisel, hiflow turbo and front mount intercooler, I have heard about 5th gear issues, but have only ever known one that went bang and it was a 3ltrbogged wrote:Numerous of the early GU box's had 5th gear issues.Rem 22250 wrote:I have heard the same but only in the 3lt's but not in the 4.2's but I could be wrong.

My oldies GU 4.2ltr turbo 5th gear went bang on the way to Sydney. Theres a slight fault in some of the boxes with the positioning of the gear on the shaft and it basically strips the teeth off the shaft when it goes. They fit an upgraded shaft and kit to fix the issue. It can still be driven in all other gears to get i home if need be, my folks were about 400k's from Sydney when it happened and drove the rest in fourth. I wouldn't recommend it, but sometime you need to just get it somewhere.
How much simple misinformation can you get?
To start all 3L and 4.2L TD share the same Gearbox in the GU. Second there was a faulty shaft issue where the fifth cog would sit and basically it would strip off the shaft. Series II on should all be resolved.
Last Nissan fixed mine out of warranty and asked no questions, its a known fault. It is recommended that you tow in 4th. Mine went and it had towed next to nothing in its life.
Anyway the dealer I took mine too in Perth had done at least a dozen shafts on both 4.2 and 3.0L, mine was the 3rd that month. Takes about a two days in the shop to sort out.
