Looks like my old S1 rock hoppers, except nowhere near as bad. Was the chip caused by fatigue on the teeth, or did a bearing fail, allowing the teeth to get misaligned??

I was doing bunny hops 
... 'dragging' a tractor, mucking around and then started making a grinding noise (first tooth that went).... kept driving then about 50k's later heard an almighty BANG, that was the 'bit' of the tooth going through the rest of the gears 
... the grinding noise then bacame this constant rolling clunking noise and I limped it to the mech the next day.... had a que of traffic a km or so long behind me cause I didn't dare go over 40k/hr

Ooch. That does look a bit painful. I remember those gears.
I'm just wondering why you would want to make out to look like you can't drive?
Drive line backlash can do serious damage... as you have proved. The more backlash there is the more chance of damage. I think the diff and tail shaft are pretty criticle here. If there both tight, then it tends to limit the amount of free play in the gearbox and transfer, hence reducing backlash.
Mine seems to have a bit but it hasn't caused a problem... cos I can drive...
Good luck with the repair. Hope it doesn't hurt the bank too much.
Let us know of the final cost. It'd be good to know how much those gears are each as well.... just incase.

This quite often happens due to shock loading.
ie a spinning wheel suddenly coming into contact with the ground and the drive train suddenly being loadeed up again. Puts enourmous (sp?) amounts of load on the gearing.
i have done exactly this and busted the front diff immediatly and the gearbox layshaft went the following week. $190 (2nd hand diff) replaced my self. $900 (grb) to be repaired, thats with me removing the gearbox.
Sounds like what would happen with 'bunny hops' ....shock loading
either way mate it's bad luck but at least ya got some good 'trophies' now hehehe

It was funny at the time Final cost was $880, but second hand gears. Guestimated cost of GEARS ALONE if new was around $1200-$1500, plus the possible wait to get them in.

Got in the car to go to a barby the other wkend for the grand final. Hmm whats that unusual noise eminating from underneath? Doesn't sound good.
Turned around and went home... got a lift with a mate instead.
Decided not to risk possible further damage so I trailered it 100ks to my folks place (where all my tools are) and had a bit of a look to see what was exactly going on.
After running the gearbox with the T-case in neutral, the noise wasn't present, so it meant it had to be some where on the output side in the T-case. Removing the tailshaft revealed a notchy feel when the output shaft was turned by hand.... Collapsed bearing.
I drained the T-case oil and found it to have a similar look to graphite grease (lots of tiny silver glitter in it) I decided that there was definatley a problem!!!

I rebuilt everything about 100,000k ago with no problems since, BUT there was one bearing I couldn't get off.
