Oil selection for the 1hz?
Hey did my first oil change in the 80 yesterday and on the advice of the guy at Repco put Penrite HPR 20-60 in her. I had planned on buying HPR 15-50 but the guy said that because my 1hz had done 313,000 it would most likely burn oil if i put the 15-50 in..
Well I did the change and I swear the engine seems like its running rougher, noisier at high revs etc. Then when I started her this morning it took ALOT longer to crank over than it used to and it idled like shit for about 30 seconds before it slowly got better. WTF?
Should I drop the oil and put back in 15-50 instead or what?

Why dont you do a couple of oil changes one after the other say every 100 or 250k this way you will be giving it a good clean out it might remove a bit of the sludge build up that diesels get. I would also change the oil filter.
Your engine may have been rebuilt previously and not be as worn out as you expect. Had 480 000 on a sd25 before I got rid of her she was still going strong.

you need 15/40w as the 1hzs are over head cams and the lifters wont pump up with the thicker stuff and in winter they wont even start we had the same problem with diesel jackeroos and petrol astras people putting what ever oil in and complaning that it hard to start or not starting. go back to repco and demand that you want the right oil and that they better hope that the wrong oil hasn't damgaed you big end bearings

thicker oil can cause damage as others have said. I would go to toyota see what they say, and then goto repco and tell them exactly what toyota said. Speak to the store manager of repco and he should give you the correct oil.

I'm pissed off now that I spent $80 on 10l of oil that I've gotta drop now and change again. What a rooster!
If you go back to repco, ask to speak to the manager, and tell him toyota has said it can damage your engine and that you want to be compensated for his staff's bad advice. Say you just want a refund. Then buy the correct oil either from them or from somewhere else.
Spoke to a few mechanics and they said it should be fine with the thicker oil atleast for the 5000k's anyway then put the thinner 15-45w oil in on the next change. When I asked about the big end bearings and the thicker oil they said it was better for them??
So instead of causing a fuss and demanding a refund I'm just gonna wait till my next oil change and put the right oil in!! Hopefully it doesn't damage the motor but the mechanics I spoke to said that it's highly unlikely it would. Also going up to steep point in a month towing a boat so they said the thicker oil in the hot weather and under strain would be good anyway..

Watch your oil pressure. if it gets too high it could blow the filter in half. This is common in 2H's when a thicker oil is used(60 weight). also, make sure your top end is all getting lubricated aswell. Thicker oil wont travel as far.
