Hilux transfer - slipping into neutral intermitently

Since i put 4.7 AA gears in (rebuilt a tcase out of an 85 with the gears) the transfer case has been slipping into neutral every now and then. It seems to happen only when in 4 Lo going down hill using engine braking. There wasnt any parts left over after rebuilding the case either :D The shifters looked fine when i had them out only a couple of months ago.

Heres some details of the set up...

85 model tcase
4.7 AA gears
Custom crossmember (not the comp style one)

Any ideas would be great.

i had the same prob when i put the duals in what i ended up doing to fix it was add a 2nd ball bearing to the low range shifter behind the spring and it hasnt had a problem since.

Mine used to jump out of low going downhill and when I finally pulled it apart there was a broken bearing retainer allowing the shaft to move one way enough to make it jump out.
Cant remember which bearing it was (maybe input?) but the retainer was broken into about 10 bits and took about 4 weeks to come from toyota japan.
Allways been a TOYOTA man.
Now I'm old and grumpy as well.

Mine does the same thing since throwing Marks4x4 gears in.
There is a heavier detent spring available from Marlin crawler that apparantly fixs the problem.
It is due to the aftermarket gears not being machined the same as the OEM ones.
Dont spoze anyone would know if the heavier detent springs are available locally? I would bet it is a genuine part from a different model or something.

i looked at the spring option but in the end using the spare detent ball i had worked just aswell and cost me nothing.

thanks guys, when you say broken bearing retainer what are you referring to? the ones on the outside of the reduction housing? Unless they have broken recently i doubt this is the prob as i just rebuilt it.

Ill give the ball bearing a go and see how it goes. Although at $4 each for the spring that might be just as good.

It was on the top shaft and it was about 4inches across, inside the transfer case.

Unless my memory if failing me, which is quite possible :?
