Hilux Manual Locking Hubs

Post by Rb25sil80 »

Hey guys, just took possession of my new 2002 hilux 4x4 dual cab ! Gotta say im totally in love with it, seems like its gonna be a really great car!

My question is this, we took her up to Fraser island on the weekend and when i got out to lock the hubs, they were already locked! So that basically means Ive been driving around with the front diff and drive shafts turning right? Should I notice any difference driving on the road now that they are in the free position? I cant see any noticeable difference at all! Would have thought perhaps slightly better economy. Dad reckons it feels "freeer", I think he's smoking crack :D

Ideas?

Cheers

Yep you are right unlocking them just saves a bit of wear and fuel i guess Yes you can notice a slight difference about 2/3 of nothing much.

I was up on Fraser last week, nice place, even with the wind blowing sand up your clacker!!

With the front hubs locked, u will use more fuel and wear out stuff faster, but its only marginal. Although I thought ALL the dual cabs where ADD (automatic differential hubs), no need to turn the hubs, but I could be wrong.

I drive with the front hubs locked for mb 2-3 days a week, every now and then if I havent been off-raod for a while, helps to lubricate parts.

When u unlock the huibs on road, you will notice the front rides a bit softer and you should feel an ever so slight rumble from the front wheels thru the steering wheel, bum ,etc, although if you havent had the truck for that long you wont know how it drives yet.

Good luck with it. PS. Dont snatch or reverse backwards too much, they have a tendency to smash teeth off the front crown wheels in reverse.
