Quite often failing high tension leads will present this problem when the motor is under strain, i.e. in a higher gear. it happened to me once when just using throttle it bubbled along ok albeit slowly.
Soon as the throttle was increased it started cross firing all over the shop
and making a sort of farting noise.
Some new leads solved the problem, even though the old ones looked ok when viewed on the motor.
Cheers Struth.
