3.0 TDi exhaust and suspension upgrades
Got a GU III. Is an exhaust upgrade worth it? ie, make it a bit easier to drive lower in the rev range or is a chip the only way to boost low end performance?
Also, what's a good suspension upgrade? Mainly day to day driving, maybe an inch higher. I get the feeling that when the thing hits a reasonable bump, the suspension seems to oscilate a bit instead of just soaking it up.

I got a dpchip and an exhaust after reading people on forums say it fixes the low end gutless problem - it didn't. It definitely improved things otherwise though, but it still sucks until the turbo is working.
If you only want an inch or so suspension, I'd take it to ARB for their standard OME upgrade

Yup, I doubt that 1 3.0 GU will ever see them klms.. Maybe some theory? Is a larger exhaust a good thing? ie, less stress on the engine? or does the increased flow (if any) mean turbo spins up a bit faster and actually pust more stress on the engine?
Has anyone in Melb ever fitter an EGT probe? If so who did it?

I have often thought about fitting a larger exhaust to my 3.0 but having spent countless $$$$ on exhaust upgrades on 4.2 petrol and diesel Patrols over the years for little or no benefit have refrained from doing so. The major benefit IMO of fitting a larger diameter pipe is that they generally sound better with the right muffler and therefore you think they are going better!!!!

yeah, I put off putting headers on my L28 for years, but it did make a difference to the thing when I did.
However I've never had a turbo engine, let alone a diesel one, but one of the first mods people do to turbo engines is an exhaust. I'm just not sure if it's worth it and want to hear from people that have. I think Roly did from the 4x4 yahoo group, but that was ages ago. I hear 'get a chip'... 'nah, get exhaust'.
I think I'll get an EGT probe fitted. Then I'll get a consult interface and do some logging. Then I'll get an exhaust with a pre and post dyno.
I think I'll also add one of those intercooler fans that kicks in at low speed and log the data on that. That way I can preesnt some data on the mods so that anyone else can see what works and what doesn't.

Blokes down at Auto Gas Convesions in Carrum Downs Dyno'ed a Diesel GU the other week for a dyno run that had a bigger zaust put on, with no other pump mods and only gained 10kw.
Awill4x4 maybe able to rememebr which donk it was, I'm gettin mine dynoed before and after each mod by Shane down there so I can see what does what increase or decrease.

He seemed to believe that a tunable chip was the best option to get more out of it, and that only a unichip could be tuned to correct issues with the EGR valve. ie, reduce it's operation so that it does not open as much or flutter (I think that's what he was trying to imply about it's operation) and destroy itself and then get sucked up into the engine, or fail open and let in too much exhaust.
Also seemed to think that the series III was fixed or much better in this regard.
Can anyone add any more to this that's not 3l bashing?

try to comprehend the flow of a conversation mate nobody has said anything to indicate they are expecting miracles. g@z: you can fix the issue for low range driving by fitting low range reduction gearing, but I suspect in highrange your only really noticeable options will be to run small tyres, maybe get lower diff or some super custom 1st gear
I stuck marks adapters 85% reduction gears in mine and the gutless low end issue is non-existant even with 36" rubber, here's a bit of an example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmWFAYRzmww
