Surely you can get stronger ones than standard for the IFS....spazbot wrote:they are called longfields they need to be put in a special solid housing that replaces the ifs in the front of your trucks

Muahahahaha...
At you I laugh. Stop bagging out IFS, seriously, grow the fuck up. Some people don't want/can't afford SAS conversions, get over it. The tech sections are for Tech, not you gay Grimace opinion on how big your SAS penis is.
Seriously, if you have nothing helpful to contribute, don't contribute anything...

I have read about porsche 930 CV's being used, they are physically much larger, and stronger .. and they also have a higher angle of operation .. Check out some of the go fast (look for toyota prerunner suspension setups) yota sites ... From what I can recall is was rather spendy though ...

that was helpful, IFS is weak as piss, anyone who knows what they are talking about knows this, thats why it gets shit baggedcrunch wrote:Muahahahaha...

the money youll spend on trying to make IFS stronger you could spend on a SAS and do it right the first time.

I asked specifically if there was any improved C.V's for MY truck, not what you would do if it were yours. Your post was not helpful in any way. all you did was state that you believed IFS was piss weak. So people don't have solid axles, vent your dismay at the manufacturers, not at those that own the truck. Yeah, sure, if I could have SAS, I would, but guess what, I don't! So be it, I'm over it, I make do with what I have. Maybe I enjoy the maccas carpark? It is awefully amusing watching you pick up the rubbish at the end of your shift.....Crunch wrote:Some people don't want/can't afford SAS conversions, get over it.

Crunch do your home work. Unless you will get roasted.
The ifs cvs rarly break and are cheap as chips your weak point is your diff and lack of wheel travel and for the price of longfields you could do a sas or get a locker or source a high pinion ifs diff centre.
I now have a live front end rig and it goes places by its self that I would,nt even think about taking ifs with othere rigs for recovery because it will break.
If you still want the ifs check out pirate4x4.com they have heaps of answers

IFS
I HAD AN 87 4RUNNER IFS WITH A DETROIT LOCKER IN THE FRONT AND AIR LOCKER IN THE BACK. I NEVER BROKE A CV IN THE 7 YEARS THAT I HAD IT, I REPLACED ONE THAT WAS AN ORIGINAL. WE DID ALOT OF DRIVES WITH LIVE AXLE TRUCKS THAT BROKE CV'S ALL THE TIME. SO I WOULDNT SAY THAT THEY ARE AS WEEK AS PISS, IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU TREAT YOUR VEHICLE!
the problem with strengthening the cv birfield on IFS rigs is you will stop cracking the bell part of it and start breaking the inner axles. They are just not long enough to twist and come back like say the long side axle off a solid front end lux, when put under big loads.crunch wrote:Put your glasses on old man.Drop Bear wrote:that was helpful, IFS is weak as piss, anyone who knows what they are talking about knows this, thats why it gets shit baggedcrunch wrote:Muahahahaha...

My suggestion is that you alter your driving style so as not to be so harsh on the front end that you break cv's. Try not to allow the wheels to lift, spin in the air then come back to ground spinning with the weight of the vehicle to stop it.
Unfortunately, whether you believe it or not, you are limited in the punishment you can put IFS through, it is desinged to give a comfortable ride over bumpy terrain at speed, not hardcore rockcrawling.
does it have a locker in the front?

The weak points in the IFS are - firstly the CW and pinion. This can be fixed (well strengthened anyway) by fitting an ARB airlocker as it has a more rigid carrier.
Secondly the steering. The standard idler arm is poo. Heavy duty options are around to fix that, thicker shaft, bronze bushes instead of placky etc.
The CVs seem to be a bit stronger than some people would have you believe.
I have heard though that aftermarket ones are very easy to break so stick with genuine stealership ones.
I am still running IFS (planning a SAS eventually) and I have twin ARBs and 35" MTRs and I push it in comps through ANYWHERE the solid front guys go. It is fun when you hear someone in the crowd go "Holy shit that guy has IFS!"
But you will never get the travel that the SA guys have with IFS hence why a SAS is on the cards for the future.
Paul.

my research on ifs ............ back wshen i had a triton (stronger front end than any lux ifs) told me that to make ifs strong u had to spend a good few grand.
stronger cv = broken diffs = stronger diffs = arb then you have a locked front = more broken cv= porsche cv's or sas conversion
basically leave it alone use the cv's as a "fuse" cos they alot cheaper than diffs.
or spend the same money as it takes to make ifs half as strong and go sas
i kno you dont want to hear it but for the coin you will waste on ifs you coild have a bundy or older lux front under it and be over the hassles
there is a reason people do the sas and no they arent that dear ............. prob as dear as 1 set of treated cv's and the center you will replace the next time you head out.
and you also have more than 200mm travel

OK, so my answer is, that normal CV's are strong enough and there is no need to source anything stronger when I replace them (because they need replacing anyway- as all parts do eventually - not because of my driving style) I didn't break them, I'm just replacing them as they are on their way out
