Theres a little demonstration device sitting on shelf at the engine rebuilder that I went to recently, which is a fan in the bottom of a plastic tube.
When you turn it on, a little plastic "X" with straight blades up in the middle of the tube stays perfectly still.
When they drop the hiclone in the top of the tube, it makes that little plastic "X" spin rapidly in the airflow.
It's supposed to prove how well the hiclone makes the airflow mix and blend.
But what is so funny about this device, is there was no hiclone nearby, so while playing with it I turned it on, and put my hand over the top of the tube and that also made the turbine spin.
So if you just want the air in the tube to swirl you can get the same result by completely blocking the tube with your hand
I pointed that out to the guy when he brought a hiclone over to demonstrate, and told him that maybe all the hiclone is doing is blocking the airflow because it has the same result.
I've been in other forums where this has been discussed ad infinitum, it usually comes down to the following:
Those who haven't used them lambasting them.
Those who have used them swearing by them,
The odd person in between who has tried them and found they didn't work, then being told off by those who support them, for not installing them correctly or using two few of them, or putting them in the wrong places, etc etc etc
I personally got told for my car I need two or even THREE of them.
One in the snorkel, one before (or was it after) the turbo, and one some other place.
I don't think a firm answer ever really gets resolved.

imagine fitting them inside your snorkel right through to your inlet manifold at intervals of 3-4".................this would give you a turbo effect right..............I mean with 35-40 of these suckers fitted as I have just described you would be running about 6-7psi without the related heat of a turbo and you would be getting about 1100km/tank out of a TD42..................pppfffttt................... .....that's it I'm gunna buy shares in this company.

Yeah, i've done this. just joined 50-odd hiclones together and wrapped 'em in duct tape to create a snorkel. I got sent a sample hyclone type device by one of my suppliers, fitted it to my 4.5 patrol (duel fuel). It did actually work, apparently i put it in the wrong spot, but it did add on 8-10% in Km per tank.
It was free, so it was worth a try.
Used to fit the Hiclones to single point injected Chev's with a carby style air box on top of the engine, they also worked. Can't recall the figures off the top of my head, that was a while ago.

At one stage I had four of them, testing for a mate who was selling and fitting them.
Two in my V8 Leyland Terrier truck ... No difference
One and Two in SWMBO's 3.2 Navara ... No difference
One in Dad's Hyundai ... slight increase in fuel consumption.
Apparently the trick is to Dyno test before fitting, then tune up after fitting and dyno again. Viola! 5 hp improvement at the wheels! Of course it's the tune up that gives you the power, not the ... device. Take it out again and those horses are still there.

My GQ petrol has a hi-clone of sorts in it standard. The round air box fitted straight after the tube comming out of the inner guard has one in it. This box is like a pre air cleaner as it sorts the large particles out of the air flow.

A friend working on a property where the toyo was long dead, pulled it out and put it in his 60 series. He thought there was an improvement but it was pretty subjective.
Just cause I was told I needed two or three of them doesn't mean I bought any. But 12 of them at $100 each. Well how can I refuse
How do you equate spinning the air with increasing it's psi?
I can't see how it equates to a turbo because spinning the air doesn't increase it's pressure.

mq's also have something similar in there airbox too.
i think on some cars they work but on alot of newer tech cars they dont do a hell of alot.
back on the day not alot of thought was put into howair got in and out of motors, they seem to care a little more now and design inlet plumbing with econamy and performance in mind

thats basicly the idea. was started years ago. people used to make em to fix fuel/air mix problems with carby motors exspecialy ones with log type manifolds or v8 mnifolds that have tend to lean out the mix on certain cylinders. however these days manifolds are designed, the swirl is made by head design and the fuel is injected.MyGQ wrote:Hiclones are supposed to help mix the air/fuel right?

the only reason a hiclone would work if there is something wrong with the motor !

Nope, I didn't buy any.
I only get suckered on normal everyday stuff, like having my recent order of bonnet scoops stolen by an Aussie Post worker, or someone selling car seats and forgetting to mention that one of them doesn't actually work.
I rarely fall for gimmicks.
