Are Bump Stops Necessary?
91' Hilux lost one the other day when one of my new u-bolts came off
I no longer take advise from this board about not using my breaker bar to do them up
So my question is do you need them?

I would say yes, otherwise you can possibly stress the shocks but collapsing them on full uptravel and using them as a bumpstop. This is not good for the shock, or the mounts. THe mounts (factory setup) are not designed to take the load that they may endure. Also, if you setup your suspension properly you can gain "forced droop" by making hte axle pivot on the bumpstop.

Why bother asking, you're not going to take advise from here anymore anywayLuxyBoy wrote: I no longer take advise from this board about not using my breaker bar to do them up

My advise is not to run no bumpstops
Ok.. so you've done a homer on your own car, Muffed it, and it's outers fault... I see how!
Are bump stop necessary?.. in short. YES
Manafacturers spend lots of money designing things the cheapest way they can. If they weren't nec' they wouldn't be there. They have a purpose.
As far as an indecent proposal goes, I'd accept nothing less than $100,000 to tolerate buggery. Any less and it's just not worth the psychological trauma.
Explain why manufacturers put sway bars on so we can take them off......?Ruffy wrote:Manafacturers spend lots of money designing things the cheapest way they can. If they weren't nec' they wouldn't be there. They have a purpose.
I agree with you that the bump stop is necessary. Without it, what else stops the movement when it bottoms out. Diff on what...?
if you did them up with a breaker bar they still woulda come loose you wombat. you need locknuts and/or split washers on these components.
using a breaker bar will just streach the bolt and make it come lose or sheer faster.
if you use your 4wd as a 4wd you should regularily check suspension components among other things.
and yes bumpstops are nessesary so that next time u stuff up your u bolts your diff stops going upwards before it destroys your undercarriage and or pannels:P

if thge ubolts break the bumb stop isnt gonna stop it, it will just move to the side of the bump stop and smash your sump anyway.badger wrote:if you did them up with a breaker bar they still woulda come loose you wombat. you need locknuts and/or split washers on these components.

Well half of you are complete morons who just want to have go at me
To everyone else thankyou for your input
All i said is that i would be using the breaker bar again instead of not using it like i was recommended by someone on here.
U-bolt kits come with split washers so unless you are stupid enough to throw them out you put them on like i did.
I used the 1/2 drive deep drive socket with ratchet and full force and i am not a little fella. The bloody thing still came off
Last time i changed them with breaker bar; i checked after one week and readjusted, this time it fell off in two days stupid thing.
Have since adjusted it with the breaker bar what do you know it hasn't moved at all
Again thank to all those who did post positive information and not just give me
