Door pockets/consoles

Post by Dane »

A couple of years ago I saw some excellent door pockets to suit my 75 series Cruiser. Regretably I did not purchase them at the time. They had a speaker moulding at the front to take about a six inch round speaker and an open topped pocket back along the rest of the door bottom. They sold for about $150 a pair at the time. I believe they were produced in Albury. I have been trying to find them now and have not had any luck. The closest I can find is custom made from Department of the Interior at about $250 each side. Does anyone know if you can still get them and where? Much appreciated.

Go to your local steel merchant and se if he can fold some up for you, cheaper than off the shelf and made to size.

Yeah Jaffa thanks, they are the Interior ones for $250 each, a little too exy for my liking. Loanrangie, I specifically want them with the speaker moulding but that is a cheap idea for just the pockets.

Could you try a car sound place. I know Northfield make door speaker pods that also have a pocket on them.

I've taken my door/map pockets off both my Rocky and my Corolla to fit speakers in the doors instead...

In saying that, try wreckers for pockets from other vehicles. Most have them like Commodores and Rockys and Corollas obviously. :D
They are plastic, and you screw through the door trim into the pocket and are very easy to install.

In the (I think) July 2006 issue of Street Machine (yeah... gimme a break...) there was an article on how the guys made the speaker pods for their competition car using MDF as a base that was fibreglassed over - messy stuff, but not particularly hard. You could then either paint it (if you get them smooth enough) or upholster them as they did.

The MDF seemed like a bad idea in a convertible when I first saw it (the competition car was a ford Galaxie) but I guess that it would have been sealed pretty well. I don't mind scanning the article and emailing it - I dont think it would be a great idea to post it due to copyright blah blah or I could summarise what they did over the weekend when I get time - PM me if you want a scan, bear in mind that it's a few pages and I only have dialup so it may be too big for me to email.

Basically, it might be a good idea if you're a bit handy - shouldn't be too exxy and you could upholster them and design them any way you want.

Thanks for the input lads, some good ideas there.

Bazzle - I like the sound the sound of the six can console fridge, it would be a great addition.

nickw86au - I was considering doing something like that if I can't buy what I want at a reasonable price as I have some fibreglassing experience. Some marine carpet over the fibreglass would be pretty neat I reckon.

4sum4 - They are a neat door pocket at a great price, half what the shops want for a very similar item. However they don't have the speaker moulding that I am particuarly keen on.

HotFourOk - I will check out the commodore ones on the girl's VS, good idea.

phippsy - I will check out the local equivelant and see what they have.

Cheers.
