Rock hoppers too slow for beach work ?

Hi peoples getting rock hoppers for gu 3.0l manual running 33s but have concerns that low range will become to slow for beach work and not in market yet for 35s , any thoughts appreciated. cheers

bloke who came to Robe wth me has a GU 3.0 with 35 Procomp MT's on and yes, struggled with pace in some of the areas.

But the only person who can tell is you, so find someone to take you for a drive and see what you think

i havent tried mine on the beach since i fitted my reduction gears, but i reckon low range will be near un useable on soft sand now. doesnt really worry me though, i dont like sand driving anyway

what reduction gears are u going for?

the 80% 40% or 20%

I reckon the 80% are to low for just about everything, why not try the 40% gears as your only running 33's and it will be over geared with 80% gears..

Yeah, a mate of mine has 33 and the rockhoppers and double difflocked, he had to do most of the beaches in high range as he was getting bogged. I have a standard gu with 33's and I was pulling him out!

I agree here, i did a 2 week trip in tassie in a 3litre GU with 35's. It did most things very well but some steeper uphill rocky sections would have benifited with the gears. Also engine braking wasn't the best. However i think you would be fine with 33's.

Also do the gears help with the 3litres surging in 1st low trying to crawl up steep hills. I found it a pain in the butt!

Hunk of sponge rubber fixes this.. cheap and easy and removeable when you wanna drive home

You sure?

We tried putting something under there rest your foot on and it made no difference. Throttle input was very light (just trying to crawl up) and we did not bounce up and down on it however the motor still surged up and down!! Is it becasue of drive by wire?

If your running 83% then yes low range is usless on sand. I have 83% in mine and even with 37s the low range is way to low.

I would recomend you go the 43% reduction but even then it could be still to low. :?

im in the process of doing them at the moment, cost so far has been $1050 for the adaptor
$250 to lenghten and shorten drive shafts incl balance
$0 for the transfer i had a spare lying around, but you can pick them up for less then $300

all i have left to do is modify the crossmember to clear the front drive shaft and work out a shifter arangment.
all up it hasnt cost much more then crawler gears. fingers crossed no issues will come up.

I have done this, cost about 3k to do it right with a two piece front shaft. running 37's and 4.625's its only just low enough for big rocks etc (87:1 overall i think). it is the best of both worlds, apart from ground clearance which is a bit lower. Not worth the $ on other than a comp truck

Ive got the 80% reduction gear from marks, and 1st is useless for sand., but saying that, i just use a taller cog...so 2nd instead of 1st etc, and it goes fine.

Yes 83% Rockhoopers are to slow for sand .

But are excellent on rocks to over come small engine syndrome.

i had marks reductions gears in my ute and ya just put it in 5th low its plenty to keep you on top with plenty of revs if not go high 4 1st
