use a surf box
they bolt straight up, have a lux transfer and are as strong as any of the other boxes mentioned

I went the Surf box first, and changed to the UZ auto mid conversion.

The primary reason:
The Surf auto is controlled differently to the 1UZ auto and therefore my sparky was going to have to run my old Surf ECU for the Auto, a UZ ecu to control the engine and frankenstein the 2 to eachother. With no guarantee that it would run well - in fact he was pretty sure it wouldn't. Using a UZ auto allows you to keep a single ECU.

This issue is of course reduced in priority if you are using an aftermarket ECU and a tiptronic device.

Also, they don't bolt straight up. I sold my surf trans and bought the same model surf trans from a guy who had already modded it. I have the list somewhere here but among the tasks he had to do was moving the oil pump, swapping bellhousings, changing the input shaft, and others.

As stated, I then had issues with the ECU and swapped the TCase and bits to a UZ ECU and feel much better, should be on the road soon.

red boy
ive seen it done.
all you gotta do is use a 1uz bellhousing. not one other mod is needed if your sparky knows his shit

but yes a 1uz box with surf rear half works too. surf box has better ratios tho

Scott (my sparky) runs Venom Cobras and has been wiring 1UZ engines for ... years, I am thinking 10 or more. Since Twisty's he had done several hilux conversions.

But from the guy who modded the Surf auto I bought:
“The auto does need more than the bellhousing, the front end (inpur shaft/plenatary/oil pump etc etc and different lenghths/splins, so you have to have someone who knows what they are doing pull down 1surf box and 1 lexus box and frankenstein both together.â€

and all of the ones you have meantioned make the drive line heeps longer. The one haultech did for bj got removed later on as he went for a different auto as he got sick of replacing it all the time.

True the length becomes an issue, the only way to make it shorter is to change the output shaft to the surf female output shaft. This in turn means you have to buy 23 spline gears for your t-case along with an adaptor all at once.
