Grinding noise i thought was coming from gearbox was actually the rear diff, put the back on jack stands, front against a large immoveable object 4th @ 60kmh jumped out noise definately diff, took tailshaft out went for a drive to confirm [fwd] Voila no noise, Now would you peoples agree in my thinking this was a pinion or carrier bearing.
thanks ahead

you are saying when you took out the tail shaft and drove it your noise was gone,
id be starting to think your noise is in your tailshaft, maybe one of your unis, even without the tail shaft, id expect it to mkae noise as evrything is still moving whilst drive in fwd

Pinion bearing wont necessarily make noise when the tailshaft is out as it has no load on it.

Have replaced both unis, it makes the most noise coasting with clutch in any where from 60-110, why do these things always happen in the middle of holidays

No theres no movement, im almost certain its either wheel, pinion or carrier bearing. One thing i forgot to mention was when coasting foot on clutch if i applied the handbrake the noise would stop, this maybe loaded the pinion-carrier up enough to stop noise, just a thought.

I have the same prob with my swb gq
The noise got worse when I replaced a tired 2" lift (with another 2" lift) & put put on 33" MTR's - from 33" ATR's
I dont know which caused what, cos I did them both at the same time, the combined height gain from tyres & the lift was about 30 -35mm, so I was leaning towards an alignment problem
The noise is most prominent with clutch in, or coasting in nuetral around 85 kph, under no load.......?
Had an "expert" take it for a drive & he reckons it's the tyres ?????
With all the shorties out there, someone must have come across this b4 & know what the answer is
cheers
