Wiring a winch

Hi,

I have a had a good search and cant find the answer to this question so just in case I have missed it I am sorry if someone has asked this before.

I am fitting a winch and I was going to run it onto the main battery but a mate tells me to run it off my dual battery.

Which is the best? Something tells me the dual battery is a bad idea but please let me know before we start

Run it to the battery that is the biggest (highest CCA).

The general rule is to run it off your cranking (ie main) battery.

However this is a long way from a hard and fast rule, and it depends a lot on what kind of batteries you've got, what kind of dual-battery control you have, how you've wired them, and what else you use your second battery for!

As mentioned general rule is to run it off your cranking/main battery. The reason is that this battery will generally charge faster and recieves greater charge. This is because most dual battery systems were designed to primarily charge the main battery and then the second battery. The second battery is usually used for fridges and lights etc and doesn't require a high current or rapid charge.
So with out knowing your set up it's difficult to say.

I guess you can then use a deep cycle as the aux batt and not have the worry of killing it while winching ?

just thought i would add i have heard of some people hooking there winch to the main battery and after winching they turn off the car only to find the battery is flat and wont start

i know dont turn off the car but it can happen

winch in spurts. Unless you're in a timed event what's the rush?? Not only allows battery to recharge but winch to cool down too.
