FJ60 running like the hairy goat - HELP PLEASE

Post by wannabee »

Hi all,

My old 1983 model FJ60 started causing problems last night - at first it was missing intermittently, but soon was jerking badly. When I pulled over, it seemed to idle OK. Then when I set off again, it was the same only worse.

After a couple of km, it was too bad to drive any further. I left it in a side street and got a lift home.

I'm heading back tonite to try a rescue mission. I am thinking that the problem is fuel related - shi##y fuel, clogged fuel filter or maybe a crook fuel pump. I am planning to change the filter and see if that helps. I will have a good look over the ignition as well.

ADVICE PLEASE:

Can anyone suggest likely causes and fixes for my problem?

Thanks in advanc',

I'll put a 6 pack of Corona's on it being points. Take a new set of points (GD207) with you or try and re-gap yours. Gap should be 0.4-0.5 thou - roughly the thickness of the foil/paper in a ciggie pack.

I should have taken the bet. A new fuel filter and the old girl is running as sweetly as a well-oiled sewing machine. Thanks anyhow. I will give the ignition system a good going-over on the weekend, just to be sure to be sure.

haha. oh well. Now how do we prove beyond all reasonable doubt that it wasnt really a point gap issue. :D

Tell ya what, since I'm such a trusting person I'll shout ya an icy cold corona if you come out on a trip that I'm on. And if I'm feeling really generous I might throw in a twist of lime to go with it.

Glad u got it going.
