What shocks to buy
Disagree with the criticism of the tough dogs, I put adjustable Ralphs on my 90 GQ about 12 months ago, with RANCHO in-cab adjusters, and it is the ducks guts. I can change settings on the go, and I find with the stabiliser unlock, and polyair bags, it gives me a huge scope for changing settings on the move.

I have heard a lot of bad things about the Rancho's. Dont know if its true or not, but it seems that in a heavy vehicle like an 80 or a patrol, rancho say you need to run twin shocks???
I run Bilstiens in mine, but when the 4" lift goes in i will be replacing them with something..was looking at tough dogs, but may give the procomps a go.

i have the tough dogs in the front of mine, the big ones 45mm ralphs 9 way adj. the wagon copes heaps of shit, no comp work, but the stuff you do with mates around... like jumping. i dont run any sway bars or rear shocks (have rancho's but all they do is stop springs falling out sometimes) and the tough dogs did a great job of keeping the wagon stable on the road and off, but like many others, one of them has sprung a leak, not sure if its a weld defect or a blow seal or other. but it seems that its common thing to happen with tough dogs or so i've read.
but other wise good strong shock, abit alittle slow acting on the slow big rocky stuff. it you can afford them why not...

Ridepro make a great comp shock for the rear of patrol, and a comp front, which we have tried against them all, and unless you want to spend $400+ a corner on Fox, the Rdepro comp shocks work really well for patrol, and arent very dear either, around $175 ea.
When I had them on mine, it would max out the suspension ramp here which is 1350mm tall.

personally i have used the toughdog 9 way adjustables, but after 2 months the sprung a leak which was giving me a dead spot in them, and causing a clunk in the front end, i ran them over all for 4 months, it took me 2 months to find the source of the clunk, i replaced all body rubbers, all front end bushes, found a crack in the seam on passenger floor, and all sorts of other bits, only to find when removed my problem was solved,
im still running 4 year old ranchos, the may not have much dampenign effect left, but the still work to a degree,
had a mate with em also, they had 2 sets replaced under warrenty,
my set were replaced under warrenty also, but i sold my new ones,

i bought my car with them on there. they are about 3 years old and have just sprung a small leak on one now.
ive been quoted 100 a corner to rebuild them so for me i think ill rebuild them over buying something else for 100 each
i personally just love how stable the car is
