Hi all did a oil and filter change today and found some small alloy bits in the sump one was about 20mm x 10mm and looks like a stone.
And was wandering if anybody knows what it could be from as i don't know of any alloy in the inside of the engine on a diesel 2.8.

bits in sump

That is a pretty big chunk of metal, something that size would hopefully be part of the cylinder, I say again ..... hopefully. Ofcourse until you pull the thing apart how will you know for sure?? One thing I do know is that deisel engines have the tightest tolerances, much more accurate and less forgiving than petrol. Thus small foreign objects can prove fatal for it. Just like water,
I would get it checked out, take the little piece into a professional diesel mech. may sound expensive but in the long run, alot cheaper. Plus you wouldnt want to get caught on in the middle of nowhere because of a problem you already know about.......

+1, unfortunatley it sounds like you have smashed a piston skirt somewhere along the track.BundyRumandCoke wrote:I agree, the only alloy I can think of in the sump area of a 2.8 is the pistons. Is this bit curved? If so, I would guess its a bit of piston skirt.

Checked a old stuffed rocky piston and it's not from that, they are made of heaver and a different type of alloy.
The only thing i can think of is the previous owner stuck something in it before they got rid of it as the bits are not from any part of the motor.
The bits are really soft stuff so they shouldn't get stuck anywhere but if they do looks like i will be able to drop a turbo motor in it
