What I mean is a gear set with larger then 83% reduction wouldn't fit in the transfer case because of the size of the gears. Apparently they have to grind some of the casing out as it is to fit 83%.
83% is overkill for 99% of people and the tyres they run anyway so any more would be just plain useless.

yeh i got the 4.88s and i need something to save my clutch a bit. so im gona do in when im changing the clutch to save on labour. as soon as i save up enough

I also see it as a waste of 2 gears if your never using first or second when you could have 43% and get use of all gears and if you need low range on the beach you can.
An example
I've never really used low range much in mine on the beach that much but I did have to tow a buggy on a car trailer off Stockton beach a couple of times and if I had of had 83% reduction at the time I wouldn't have been able to use low range which would have met I couldn't have towed the stuffed buggy off the beach and that is with 37s.

as mick said 4.88 diffs n 85% gears is to low with 37", with turbo td42 n 35" there is not much need for any reduction so why do you need to reduce low by 85% to go to 37".
With 4.88 diffs n 37" my ute drove fine, when I fitted the marks gears it was to low never used 1 n 2.
Try driving a loose hill climb say 35 to 45 degree incline that is 50m to 100m long with real low gearing n see how far you get before you run out of revs, I would even consider the 27% gears for 37"tyres n run 4.6 diffs you only need enough reduction to take the load off clutch n let the motot work near idle

So what's your advise for someone running standard transfer gears and 4.1's with 37's. Better to go 85% and leave the 4.1 diffs (turbo diesel so goes ok most times but can be a little sluggish up big hills) or should I replace diff gears and go 43%? Obviously the latter is more expensive, so is it worth the extra expense?

Yes I do and the 83% reduction gears work well with my 42s on but rockcrawling with the 37s the 83% is overkill.

With the 42s on I can go down a steep hill take my foot off the trottle and it will almost come to a stop if I lock it in first.
So you can imagine how low it feels with the 37s on. If possable you should try and find someone with reduction gears in a patrol like your one and take it for a spin and see what you think. Your not around the Newcastle area are you or you don't happen to be going to tufftrucks?

you still have to grind to fit the 43%, not sure if its as much as 85%. not hard to do though. For what its worth if you're not absolutely confident and got the correct tools THEN GET SOMEBODY WHO DOES THEM, TO FIT. Heaps of heavy hard work. This is from a part time back yard, hack mechanic point of view.
