80 Series speedo correction
Yes, I searched.
My brother has a diesel 80 series, which he actually uses offroad (Cape York, Kimberly, Simpson, Anne Beadell...) But he's still running 31x10.5R15 Bridgestone Desert Duellers, and gets punctures where the rest of us (various 16" sizes) don't.
He's happy to buy 16s (money is not an issue) but he wants his speedo to be accurate - so he's not keen to go 265/75-16 (nominally a 32").
He reckons he's currently within 1% at 100km/h, and doesn't want to lose that. So he doesn't care that 32s would only be about a 3% change - it's too much.
I know there are electonic adjusters available, but I wouldn't be happy with that myself, so I'll have trouble selling the idea to him. I've seen some mention of replaceable gears to correct the speedo, but not sure how big a job this is.
Can anybody supply some part nos, and/or rough idea of how hard to replace?

if he gets a petrol spedo face and places it over the diesel spedo, he will get a 10% speed up and can then run 35's. Another great idea is to put the gear out of a later 80 in the transfer, it has one more tooth, and spins slower as a result. Temember, pre 8/92 had cable and cant be corrected electronically

How different is the cable speedo drive on the early 80 series to the 60 series? did all the early 80 series come with 15 inch wheels, were the 16 inch rims an option on the early models? If they were an option, was there a difference in drive gears??

No mines a Petrol and because its a late model it came factory with 16" rims. The Prado rims should bolt straight on. I have one of these fitted, just with a flick of teh switch, once you've taken 10 minutes to set it up and you can flick the speedo to read correctly between your 31 inch highway tyres and the 38 inch play tyres. AND works for all tyres sizes. I can not distinguish any difference between the speedo and GPS, wiht differing tyres sizes, just flick to another program in the "little box".

You can change the speedo driven gear in the transfer case.
That was the only change they did from 15in to 16in rims.
you can buy it from toyota, it comes with a new seal aswell.
Its easy to do, just pull out the speedo drive out of the transfer case, pop of the cir clip, push the speedo drive shaft out , replace the seal and replace it with the 16 inch version, refit cir clip refit to car.
Under 30 mins all done, hardest part replacing the seal

GPS itself is extremely accurate, probably better than your average radar gun, but can drop out to easily to be relied apon.
Id be searching for a speedo company, there is a place near me in ringwood, but that doesnt help you out, let your fingers do the walking prob

The kit sounds pretty good. I'll check it out. It's satisfying making it yourself too. I purchased and made one of their dual battery management systems which I'm not sure that they still make. Works well though also.
